I liked him. He listened to me and let me tell him about all the problems that I have had with the GERD and the different doctors that I have seem about it. The office staff has been very helpful. They got me in touch with the "New You" group right away to be able to talk to other people who have had the surgery and are waiting to have the surgery.

I called to make my initial consult today. I have not yet met or talked to the Dr. His office staff was very friendly...and tooks loads of time to answer my questions! (trust me I had tons). They scheduled me for 2 weeks from now..thats fast! I will update more info when I get it.
****Saw Dr. Heap today for my initial consultation, he was awsome! Has tons of experience with the DS as well as the RNY's. He was a little hard to understand at times, kinda like Ozzy Osbourne LOL. He has a very structured aftercare, definitly likes people who have done thier homework before coming in. He spent all the time I needed to answer my questions, overall I rate him a 9 at this point.

He seemed really nice, he joked and laughed at my jokes and I came away feeling like a million bucks, and knowing that I will have a new lease on life. His office staff is really nice that make you feel welcome.Make sure you take a list of questions, when you get in there you will forget what you wanted to ask if you don't. That way all your questions will be answerd, He also like you to take a list of questions that way he know that you have been doing your home work and that you aren't just jumping into things blindly. He has really good after care he won't just dump you after the surgery. He will do blood work and check you progress as needed. He is a 10 as far as Surgeons go He is caring and he list his education on this site along with how many surgeries he has done and what types of surgeries he has done.

In my initial consultation, Dr. Heap was kind, informative and brusk. He does have an accent but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. He took plenty of time to answer all my question and I didn't feel at all like he was rushing me to hurry up and leave. When I went to his office to pay his fee, which was 10 months after my consultation, he talked with me again, and was very nice and attentive as was his staff. I am looking forward to getting my surgery done and, after reading about him, I feel very confident that he will do his best.

He was very understanding to my concerns.
He gave me a complete exam and chatted with me for about two hours.
His staff has been incredibally helpful and kind.
I havent found anything I dont like yet but will let you know.
He is not on any Ins. provider list and never will be. You need to get approved yourself though his staff will help in any way they can and are very knowlegable.
He explains that aftercare is inpairitive and should be taken seriously.
Yes there is a structured aftercare program and support group.
I would have to rate him at this point 85%.
Both are extremly important.

From reading the postings of other patients, I was quite prepared for a competent surgeon with not much bedside manner. What I found was a great surgeon who is very forward and honest. I like that in people. He answered all my questions, gave extremely honest answers, and got me scheduled very quickly. I'm impressed. He's a "real" person just looking to help his patients.

My meeting with Dr. Heap was very matter of fact and to the point. I was immpressed by the amount of info he supplyed me with, and or how to get more if I wanted it. That is how I came to know about obesityhelp.com. The staff was very nice and helpful. I look forward to future meetings with him and his staff. Update more after surgery.

I found Dr. Heap among a list of surgeons online. I drive 4 hours to meet with him on 12/11/01. I had been forewarned that his bedside manner was not good (whatever the heck that means), so I was a little nervous. There was NO reason!! He was funny, informative, helpful, and just wonderful! I was lucky that one of his post op patients was there for a checkup, so Dr. Heap insisted I talk with the patient as much as I needed. It was wonderful and I got to ask those silly questions ("Did it hurt?") that you know a Dr. just can't really answer. I brought a friend with me who had plans to get the RNY procedure, but after our meeting with Dr. Heap, she changed her mind!! He answered all questions and did not rush me at all. He took whatever time I needed and he waited until I was completely satisfied. We spoke of presurgery preparation, aftercare, risks, and even statistics of his patient history (he offered phone numbers and email to past patients). He then introduced me to his staff, who were very friendly (yes, they ARE busy... but they are always very friendly and helpful!) and they immediately went to work for me and how to talk with my insurance company. It is now a month later, and I have the approval from my insurance company (with Dr. Heap's office helping!) and a surgery date of 02/20/02! I will update after the surgery.
UPDATE!! It is now TWO MONTHS since my surgery on 2/20/02 and I am doing fantastic! I was in the hospital for 4 nights and in a local hotel for two additional nights until the drain tubes came out. Dr. Heap visited me every day in the hospital and we spoke daily while I was at the hotel. The surgery itself was insignificant and the doctor took care of me 100%. He always treated me well and I felt "special" to him throughout the entire stay in his care. When I finally had the drain tubes removed after a week, he told me that I looked great (I felt great!) and that he couldn't wait to see me in 3 and/or 6 months! He flattered me and made me feel like 100 bucks. As far as his actual SKILLS, he was incredible. The surgery was about 3 hours, and he removed my galbladder during the DS. He followed up with blood thinners after the surgery and my pain level was always monitored and taken care of constantly. The hospital staff was fantastic (even when I was in bitchy morphine mode) and I had an excellent experience in my own private room. I DID have issues, I got my period, had problems with swelling and not being able to eat right away, but the doctor was always right there to perform a test or administer a remedy when I needed it. I hear stories of other great BPD/DS surgeons out there... but I just can't say enough positive comments about Dr. Heap! He is my hero!!

Dr. Heap is a very busy man, although he makes time for his patients as best he can. He did everything possible to save me money, as he knew I was self pay. I pushed myself in the hospital, and he let me leave on the second day, and did rounds for me two days in a motel. On Easter Sunday, I might add. He is very "to the point", and direct, and he appreciates people who have done research and do not waste his time. I feel that his staff is busy, and can sometimes be a little short, but I understand. They got me in when I needed, and Dr. Heap even took a call from me at 5:00 a.m., and met me at the emergency room when I thought I was having breathing problems. Turned out to be nerves, and healing muscles, but he was there, and didn't charge me for the visit. He was available by cell phone when I needed him, and seemed genuinely concerned for my well-being. I would go to him for the surgery again, and have and will continue to refer friends to him. He is not a warm-fuzzy guy if you are looking for one, but his surgical skills greatly make up for it. I haven't had any problems!
