Today was my final meeting with the surgeon. I spent the entire day at the hospital, and I must have had my blood pressure taken fifty times. A 37-year old woman named Candy will be having the operation the same day as me. We will be the only RNY patients at UMDNJ that week. Candy is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, and I will be having my surgery sometime after 12 noon. They scheduled us together today, so we met, and as a matter of fact, our blood work, x-rays, etc. were back to back. It was less scary for me to go through everything because I saw someone else doing it right ahead of me. Iris, Candy's "angel" was along, and the young woman informed me that she had RNY Gastric Bypass with Dr. Kamelgard in 1999. She showed before photographs, and the difference was amazing. Iris was open to questions, and even showed us her scar (not bad!). I had difficulty imagining Iris as a heavy person, but she was. The staff at Dr. K's office is very nice. Kathy and Barbara made me feel especially at ease, and it was nice. I had to walk in the hallway for six minutes, and I had to inform the physical therapist of my comfort and if I was out of breath at the end of the time. To tell the truth, I was a little tired, no doubt a symptom of the morbid obesity. I signed the consent papers, and it was not easy. This is not a light-hearted decision. Despite the risks, I think that this is the best decision for me. I did not become obese only because I ate more than the average person. I believe my body has a bigger capacity than most, and I could never fill the tank. I see the RNY as a correction for me, to be more like other people. Some say that the operation is drastic, but I consider my obesity problem just as drastic. I have the chance to change this problem, and I have to take that chance.
