Shands Hospital
I had great Doctor care at the hospital and that is it. My nursing care was a complete nightmare. It started with the ng tube. The third night in the tube started chocking me and I started to vomit, called for nurses and they never came. It wasnt till the lady next to me started calling for help that they came running. Then instead of calling the doctors they gave me something to knock me out and had me sleeping upright. The docotrs came in three hours later and said they should have called the tube could come out and took it out right away. The nurses never responded to the call buttom not even to unplug you so you could use the restroom. Thank god my husband was there. He started sleeping in the waiting room from that day on so I could call him on his cell phone for help if needed.
Day 4, the doctor said I could be sponged down. I asked the nurses for help and they said NO you can take a bath. I told them my docotrs said no I couldnt and they said they know better, water has never hurt anyone and showed my husband where he could take me down the hall and help me. One nurse actually told my husband he was fired, after the iv was buzzing and she had to come in to see why. That is just how sorry they were. I cried on my 4th night when my bowls started waking up for I feared not being unplugged to go the bathroom in the middle of the night.I talked to my doctor about it and reported everything to the head nurse but it didnt get better at all. Thank god I got to leave on my 5th day I really couldnt take much more after all I had been through.
Over all my rating would be Good.Shands is a non-profit Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida. My Surgeon and his staff were excellent.Anesthesia was good.I spent the first day in Intermediate ICU which was excellent. The nursing staff on the 6th floor was about 75% good and 25% Poor.Housekeeping was very Poor.Physical Therapy and respiratory therapy were good.Overall I came through the surgery with no complications.
They treated fat people like they were herding cattle.
I am thankful that my husband and mother were there for me. It appeared that the hospital was understaffed. My husband took care of my personal needs, from taking me into the bathroom and helping me bathe, to actually changing the sheets on my bed. In the hospitals favor, they were well equipped to handle obese patients. They offered bariatric beds and large wheelchairs and shower chairs. Without them, I would not have been able to move around or bathe adequately.
Overall I have no complaints.
I love my surgeon and he and his staff are obmitted from this. The hospital was very run down, the nurse staff seemed understaffed and horrible attitudes. The occupational therpy nurse was wonderful and I often wondered how she ended up there. She even had problems with the nurse staff while trying to help me. Upon arrival at 6:00 a.m the unorganization began and it continued until they knocked me out. I was very emotional and scared and so was my family before they even started things. I mean they didn't even have my chart and begain administrating and IV and other medications based on me providing them with my name. They kept saying the charts should have been there. The eppedural people were horrible too. When I got to the operating room, it was hot in there by the way my first thought was sterial??? aren't these usually freezing? They were like ok, move over to this table. I was tatally numb by now, my back and stomach and my left leg. I tried for a couple of minutes to move myself, with 3 people just sanding at my side looking at me. Finally I wa in tears and I said, I can't do it, maybe if you lift my left leg I could push and they were like, well lets see and mumbled among themselves and finally lifted the sheet and me over to the table. I haven't said a word, but I think I will let my surgeon know on my 1mts checkup.
