Shands Hospital
I was very satisfied.
As far as pre-op with all the departments I have no complaint. The surgical team members were excellent. As far as the sixth floor surgery wing, I was definitely not impressed. I was told I would be put directly into a bari-bed after surgery, which did not occurr. The nurses were overworked and very rude. I was allergic to the morphine shots and had to have a shot of Benadryl at the same time; however they forgot to bring the latter and after waiting for two hours, itching all over.and in tears I finally called the nurse administrator. The nurse came in and said here's your Benadryl shot and left. They complained that I was not having enough output through my catheter, but when I requested ice I would have to wait for extremely long periods of time. My roommate had numerous loud visitors including a crying baby which needless to say was very disturbing. My room was close to the nurse's station and during the night I would repeatedly have to call them to close my door due to their loud, raucous laughing at all hours of the night. I was never offered a clean gown or any help with a sponge bath until my fourth day. The rehabilitative team were excellent. My husband called the patient advocate due to the nurses unresponsiveness to my needs. As far as food, I did receive the broth, but on three occasions I was brought cranberry and grape juice (very high in sugar) along with sugar popsicles. After the first time, I started saving them to show to my Surgeon's team. My surgeon finally had a meeting with the nurses and from what I hear, he was not very happy. I had my surgery on Thurs. and although I kept asking for help to get up they did not get me out of bed until Sun. morning. The first time up I was very weak, sore, and dizzy. The second time I nearly passed out on them. As a result when they came back later that day, I refused to get up because I still had a dizzy headache. Later that night one of the nurses made a snide remark that I had not been out of bed since surgery and had refused physical therapy. I was very upset and informed her that I had been up twice that day and that she was out of line. I told her under no circumstances was she to set one foot back in my room. My room was not cleaned in an acceptable manner. After I had pointed out to one of the nurses that there was tissue paper on the floor coming out of the bathroom, she asked me "Well, who put it there?" I informed her it certainly wasn't me since I had not been out of bed and it certainly wasn't there when I woke up that morning.Needless to say, after five days, I was definitely ready to leave. I had asked for a private room and had planned on my husband staying with me because I had previously heard the horror stories concerning the sixth floor. Due to being in a semi-private room and no accomodations for a reclining chair for him to sleep on, I insisted on him going home and working the few days I was hospitalized with the knowledge that I would need him more when I came home. Mistake, BIG MISTAKE.
Staff needs more education on pain management.
