Dr. Baker is a typical surgeon, he's in and out in a flash. Which is ok with me as long as he knows what he is doing. He is a very intelligent man that actually cares about the success of his patients. Some complain because he is very strict, he knows what works and what does not. He wants you to be successful. he has answered all of my questions and his staff is wonderful. A++
I met with Dr. Baker briefly when scheduling my surgery. He seemed very caring, and definitely confident in his work. Most of my dealings with his office were with his nurse, Lisa. Since Lisa has had the RNY, she could relate well to my feelings and concerns. So far, I have been very impressed with Dr. Baker, and his office staff.
My first impression of Dr. Baker is that he seems really nice, and seems to really care about his patients. He stated in his informational meeting today that he does many other types of surgery laproscopically, however he feels that doing this surgery laproscopically is not totally safe yet. And when he feels the instruments and techniques are safer he will begin doing it laproscopically. His informational meeting was very informative, he answers many questions and his office staff and nurses are there also. In fact Judy presented most of the seminar. She seems absolutely wonderful. Their biggest emphasis is in 2 areas what the patient can do before the surgery and how it makes the surgery and healing go better. And, follow up care afterward, they stressed this a zillion times. They explained exactly why we would have to do certain things and follow strict regimens afterward, and the consequences of not doing it. Dr. Baker does have a structured aftercare program, a support group called "Images" which meets the second Monday of every month. They walked us through the Roux en Y and Vertical banded gastroplasty and explained why he only does the Roux en Y procedure. They passed out many handouts and we were also able to talk with several people who have already had the procedure done, including one of the nurses. This is all my first impression just from the informational meeting.
After meeting with Dr. Baker to set my surgery date, I have to say I am even more impressed. He certainly puts you at ease and I feel confidant in his abilities. He is very strict about the no smoking and losing the 10% of excess weight prior to surgery.
I feel Dr. Baker's office staff are wonderful, Lisa especially. She has been through the surgery herself and is such a huge support to people going through the process.
I have not met him yet - I am attending the July 10th introdution meeting at 11:30. I will update you after that date.
I will be meeting the Nurses on August 7th (I have to see them first before going on to Dr Baker) I am sooooooooooooo excited!
8-07-01:I met my nurse - Very informative and nice - she actually had the surgery herself! I am now just waiting for Dr Baker to send a letter to my insurance company.
8-16-2001: Called insurance company to see if they received a letter from Dr Baker for approval of the surgery - NO. So I called and talked to Dr Bakers nurse she said my file is on Dr Bakers desk and the dictation is not yet done. I was on top of his pile and should be next.
8-21-2001: Called the clinic to follow up and I was told the same thing not yet been dictated. I was a bit upset at this point and the lady told me that she was surprised
to see that it was on his desk- it usually takes TWO MONTHS before a letter is sent out!
Good gravy! If he is that over worked send me somewhere else! I am not happy with Dr Bakers handleing of my papers/case at this point!
9-10-2001: I called my insurance today for something else and asked by chance to see if they had received a referral from Dr Baker yet. The gal, Jen said YES today and they will send me and Dr Baker a letter of their decision! Now I wait patiently again, worrying that I may now be laid off I have another thing to worry about. I have already decided that if it is approved (please please please) I will pay for cobra to continue with this journey!
01/02/02 I met the nurse today and have a new clause in my insurance allowing this surgery to be covered. I have to loose 10% of my extra weight (14#) before I can meet Dr Baker to get a surgery date.
01/07/02 Insurance has contacted me - I am approved!
02/05/02 I met the nurse, I have lost 9.5 pounds and need to loose another 3-4! No problem! I was told they are scheduling out into April, my luck someone cancelled and asked if I would like to book March 6th! I said YES! 9:15am March 6th I will have my NEW birthday to LIFE! I will keep you posted.
Feb 20 , 2002 Down 15 pounds - more than what was requested by Dr Baker! I am on my way to March 6th faster than I think!
Dr. Baker is FANTASTIC! Great bedside manner, and he is very concered for your best outcome. I went home and on the first night I had a temp. He gives you his personal pager #, so I called that. He allayed my fears, and then called me back at 7am on the next morning (a Sunday) to see how I was doing.
His office staff is wonderfully supportive, and they return calls promptly. They really are great "cheerleaders"!
You will be required to lose 10% of your excess body weight before the scheduling of your surgery. It's tough, but necessary because then Dr. Baker can make a smaller incision, and there's less risk. It also serves to get you into the right "mindset" for the post-op diet, as you will be on liquids for 3 weeks after the surgery.
Aftercare is emphasized-- they have "images" support groups throughout the state, and have a coordinator on staff.
I'd rate my experiences with Dr. Baker and his office staff at a 10. They have given me a new life. :-) I honestly haven't had any negative experiences.
my first impression was that he seemed to be a very caring person. The office staff has been wonderful and they all have been very friendly and helpful. They all seem to love what they do and they let you know everything that is going to be happening. The risks of surgery have been explained . I would recommend this surgeon just from the little that I know and I have had other friends who have had their surgery done by him and they have all said he and his staff are wonderful. I am excited to be going on this journey and I know I will be in good hands.
Dr. Baker has a certain aloofness about him, but is very confident and sure of himself and his program. The reason I chose him as my surgeon is his staff and program. Everything is set-up to a tee. His staff are excellent, and aftercare is second to none. Dr. Baker spent many years as a general surgeon, but now does ONLY gastric bypass. He has perfected his craft and knows what he\'s doing. Of the people I have spoken to, 90% or so (myself included) have had absolutely NO complications at all! My recovery was a breeze, and I think this was due in part to Dr. Baker and how he runs his program. I only spent 2 days in the hospital after an open RNY, and felt good after a few more days at home. Dr. Baker and at least one of his nurses came and saw me in the hospital at least once a day, and I was also seen by a nutritionist, pharmicist, and several other program nurses (2 of whom also had GB surgery). They do a lot of teaching, so when you go home, you have very few questions. Also, when you go in for your one-on-one with a nurse, you get a 30+ page booklet explaining everything about the sursgery, preparation, post care, diet etc. Very complete. I had my surgery in October 2001, and still feel this was the best overall program I could have chosen, and couldn\'t be happier. Dr. Baker is a skilled surgeon who has taken the time to carefully choose a top-notch support staff.
