J. Rivera Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Rivera is now retired. He retired February 28th. He did a good job with me. My first impression was that he was too busy and that I would not have enough time with him. He made time for me and I am happy with everything that he did. He is sometimes hard to understand with his heavy accent. He had me come back to the office often for check ups and to check my blood.
First impression was that he was a pretty serious man. I appreciated that since I am VERY serious about this surgery. Once we got through all of the surgery details and the Q & A part of the consult, I started to see the more personable side of him. I liked that he offered to give me a name and phone # of a reference before I asked him for one. (Funny thing is that I've contacted that VERY SAME person already thanks to this web site!)
The office staff seemed incredibly busy. I wouldn't say they were rude, just very busy with trying to keep up with all of their patients and paperwork. I also wouldn't say they were overly friendly either though.
Dr. Rivera covered the aftercare details pretty well. He gave me copies of everything to keep which is nice to have.
I was impressed with Dr. Rivera, he seems very well educated, and confident in his work.
My impression was just reinforced as the consultation went on.
Dr. Rivera's staff was very nice, and helpfull.
the only complaint I had about him, is that he is so serious, and not very personable, but i guess that is good, i would rather have an Excelent surgeon, rather than a friendly one
he empahasized a lot about after care
yes they have a structured aftercare proogram, up till a certain amount of time, then he released u to your family doc, with a lot of instructions and what to look for what to care for and what to avoid and how to handle it all
He puts the risks right on the table, and does not sugar coat them.
I would give him a geat overall rating
I would like both bedside manner and competence, but if i could only have one i would chose competence.
5/3/03 Went to see Dr. Rivera on Friday, May 2, 2003, and let me just say he is not the most cordial man I have ever met! He was very focused on the procedure and the things needed to begin the process. He knew I was serious when I unzipped my backpack and whipped out my pad and pen to take notes and ask the pre written questions. Then I preceeded to give him my referral letter, my psychological Evaluation AND my own 3 page, typed letter to Medicaid! He was astonished by my initiative in that I had done everything needed for Medicaid approval and I had my questions already written out. He was very professional and impersonal...which is fine with me. If he is that dedicated to his medical practice, I am sure he must be a fantastic surgeon. All his energy is centered on it, none is spent on bedside manner! I am not looking for a friend, I am looking for a competent surgeon...one who knows his stuff! And for that...I suggest Dr. Rivera. Of course, these are just my thoughts and your impression may be totally different from my own. 4/24/03
I have a first consultation scheduled now. I have chosen Doctor J. Rivera, In Michigan City, IN. I have read all about him from postings at the site and I have spoken To Pam Pate(who had her procedure performed by him) several times. I am ecstatic! I am so happy things are finally moving forward.
I thought that Dr. j rivera was going to act distant. Because he has this very strange look, that would make you scared in forget what you were going to ask him. My impression , of him changed when he started talking to my husband and i. I Thought to myself this guy is so cool, I really understand him very well, and the way he explained everything, I had no questions for him in the end and nore did my husband. His office staff is great. This staff is really down to earth and, very sweet. I liked everything about him. I just have this strong vibe about him. Besides he was very concerned about me, and my paper work. He emphasize on aftercare alot, and he also wants to make it clear on what meds you will be takeing and, how you hath to eat those food contents. That was made very clear. He explained the risk of the surgery, but he also was very caertain that, he knew his job very well. from the number 1 thru 10, he gets a 10, the man knows his job. So far as i can see, his surgical competence, is very strong. I will let you know more as time goes on,until than, keep hope alive. god bless!!!!!!!!!!!!!.03/08/03: Well I guess i have more to say since i have had my surgery by him. He is the best. I like his manners tward you. He is such a sweetheart. In the man knows his job.
He was professional, first thing he asked me was my age. Told him 66 and he said he would never do anyone my age. I felt defeated, he
did ask me questions about my health however just shook his head. I am in good health except my weight which does cause leg pain after walking. I felt he really was bored w/
me. Told me about another patient he did who was 62, had heart trouble, who begged him &
told him she was going to die anyway. Was from the same city I am from and she happens
to be my best friend. I felt he was unprofessional saying her name which I under-
is to be confidental. I felt he was unfeeling
He did not talk to me about aftercare did tell me he had to go around main organs which he said would be to dangerous at my age. Rate him 1 to 10, 2. I feel surgical competence is #1 however bedside manner is
very important.
He did surgery on my dear friend and she has done very good. It is important for me to say these were my personal impressions of my own personal experience. I do not wish to make any statements about what other people may experience.
My first impression of Dr Rivera was that of a very serious man!! Which if he is gonna have me under the knife he better be serious!!!! LOL :-)
My impression has not changed about him!
The office staff has treated me fairly, there were days they would say they'd call me back but it was a coupld of days later but they always called me back!!
I love Dr Rivera's office staff
Anyone planning on using Dr Rivera and his Staff should know they are very professional and conduct themselves as such.
They are serious people and I love it.
Dr has set limits for aftercare and I will follow it to a T cause who likes to puke?
LOL
I had to sign a paper stating I understood all the procedures and the unfortunate misfortune if something does happen to me.
Not sure about his bedside but who cares he is a very serious man and I love him!
