Dr Alvarez saved my life. I am a diabetic and since the surgery over a month ago I have only had to take a very small amount of insulin and only had to take it 2 times. I had some initial concerns about going to Mexico with all the headlines about cartels and such so i left my wife at home and underwent the surgery by myself. If i had known about the experience before i would have brought my whole family including my 2 kids ages 8 and 2 1/2. If you are overweight or even a diabetic i assure you the care that Dr Alvarez and his staff give you is 5 star you will not regret it what are you waiting for..

I know a lot of people that have used Dr. Alvarez and haven't heard one bad thing. Every nice thing I have heard about him is true! He was very warm, kind, and caring. I couldn't have been happier with the doctor I picked. Every Dr. and staff member of Dr. A were wonderful. They were all very kind, especially his nurses, Jessica and Jesus. They were awesome! They tried to make sure i was as comfortable as possible and taken care of. They also kept my husband fed by walking him to nearby restaurants for his meals, which he loved. Dr. A has a very nice set up there. He has it down to a science. We flew in, called the hotel and were quickly shuttled where we waited for Rosy. She took us to our hotel for the night and then took us across the border to the clinic the next morning. When we arrived I went in his office and we discussed the surgery and then went straight for blood work and X-rays, then went to my room to change into gown. I was probably in surgery within 30 min. Afterwards, I woke up back n my room with Jessica there. Between the doctors and nurses, there were people in and out all the time which was very reassuring. They answered all questions that I had and before I left I was explained everything that would be happening in the coming weeks. I couldn't have been more pleased with my overall experience. The travel was smooth and the care was great! He knows what he is doing and runs a smooth practice. I had my surgery a month ago.I have had minimal pain and minimal scarring. I'm feeling great now. Any questions I have had, I have emailed and he has gotten right back to me. I would recommend this surgery and Dr. A to anyone!

My husband and I had the VSG procedure. We both are one month out of surgery and feeling great. Dr. Alvarez is a very caring and genuine person. He really listens to you and explains and answers any questions you may have. All of his staff is very professional and makes you feel like family. The hospital is older, but is very clean even better then some in the US. When you stay here you feel very safe and have no worries. Both surgeons came to check on us several times a day after surgery. We had very little pain and discomfort. We've have had no complications. We are giving Dr. Alvarez and his staff a A+!
Thanks Dr. Alvarez and your staff for changing our life!

I had my VSG procedure done with Dr. ALvarez in January 2013. My experience was one that I will never regret! I had no fear of traveling to Mexico as I knew others who had made the trip, had the same procedure, and had only good things to report from their experience.
His program is very structured and informative every step of the way--and this is a very important and good thing--you always know what to expect and there is really no fear of the unknown--unless you are obscessed with numbers and only time will tell how much will be lost. All risks were explained in the material presented and all questions were answered before admission to the hospital.
Dr. Alvarez is very concerned about your success and therefore keeps in touch to allow questions to be asked at any time. Susan or Dr. Alvarez are always available and are very prompt with getting a reply to you.
The care I received at his clinic and in the hospital was very personal and attentive. The facilities were all very clean and the staff very kind, courteous and professional.
I will give Dr. Alvarez' surgical competence and his bedside manner a very HIGH score--he was the BEST as far as I am concerned!!!
I will recommend Dr. ALvarez to anyone who is contemplating the VSG procedure--he is a great surgeon and a great "new" friend.

when learning of how many of my friends were having the gastric sleeve done to get a handle on thier weight it prompted me to investigate and see if by chance i qualify. and i did hip hip hurray! i seen a doctor in our state and when he told me cash $17,000.00 i like to have feel off the chair. so i started searching the internet found dr. alvarez in mexico and filled out the information and not log susan called and explained everything to how it works and his cost well of course when she said cash $8700.00 i was really curious why such a price difference so my little brain went to work goolged all the information i could on dr.alvarez. he had all the qualifications that the dr here in this state had so i called and asked if there were other patients i could email and guess what it was for real and even susan is a patient of his so to make a long story short. they set everything up told me what i needed to come to mexico and it was just as easy as if i had done it here. they are in contact with you and any given time i can email either dr. alvarez or susan if i have any questions. the hospital is like minutes inside the border and my whole experience was wonderful the interperter keeps the staff aware if you need anything and if your family is with you they see to thier needs as well. his staff is awsom!! dr alvarez has given me life even though i was not real big but it took this for me to control my weight and now i am on the mend and have had no compaints. my surgery has been a great success for me but yet a long haul. it is not a easy surgury but its been worth it for me!! the one thing that really stood out that both dr alvarez and his associate they greet each morning with a hug and commend each other on having a good day our doctors here don't do this its all about the almighty dollar. you could not at any given time straight out of surgery he has the nicest bed side manner and did i mention he is easy on the eyes and when he speaks to you he has such understanding that you just feel confident that everythings gonna be ok. the after care he gives is always open just txted, email and you get response. he tells you up front follow the phases and (each time one phase changes he lets you know) do exactly like i say and you will not have any issues. its is that simple to i have not had any problems with leakage, nausea. the way i feel about dr. avarez and his staff and susan they are wonderful people and still want to help others find that happiness within themselves and i greatly appreciate all of them!!!! i wish everyone could be as concerned as dr.a is. my one experience when in the hospital i had done had my surgery and was walking the hall trying to move the gas and was feeling kinda week and there was a chair in the hall i sat down and dr. alvarez walked out of those doors from doing surgery and asked me if i was ok and i needed anything for pain i said yes and he immedently took care of it. there is no comparison to the experience i had in mexico it was truely one that i will never regret.

I am still surprised that I am already post op and have lost forty pounds so far. I was sleeved on November 17th 2012. I am so happy with my choice and do not regret one moment of my experience with Dr. Alvarez. I was impressed with the level of professionalism and compassion that everyone displayed. I would do it all over again. Travel was so easy and I felt safe the whole time. I recommend Dr. Alvarez to anyone who is considering weight loss surgery.

Since my health insurance made it impossible for me to qualify for WLS and required so many out of pocket expenses (starting with a $5000 deductible!), I looked for other options and discovered Mexico. There were several places available but decided on Dr. Alvarez after reading so many reviews that said how incredible he was.
Like so many others, it was the best thing I've done for myself and wish I had done it sooner! All the reviews are so accurate, my surgery was Dec 27 and it went exactly like they described: from coordinating with Susan, to the ride across the border with Rosie, to working with Jessica and the hospital staff and to finally meeting the "bariatric rockstar" myself!
There was one difference, though and it was right before I was wheeled into the OR. I didn't have time to get nervous about being put under in Mexico because the pre-op doctor, my friend and I were having so much fun and laughing so hard. Next thing I knew, it was time to gown up and go! I still remember giggling on the gurney.
Of course, I had my fears and didn't tell friends or family until I got home safely because I didn't want to hear any negativity. Now I'm proud to say where I went and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. People are amazed and intrigued and want to hear all about it.
The thing that pleased me the most was how brilliant, knowledgeable and competent Dr. A was; and he treated us with such ease and confidence, like we were old friends. He even had me email him to let him know I got home safely! He sent me regular updates on my post-op diet and answered my questions himself.
What doctor does that? Here in the US, you have to go through a nurse or office staff before you can actually talk to a doctor.
I am one month post-op, have lost over 40 lbs since the start of the liquid pre-op diet and have gone down several sizes. I couldn't be more pleased with how things are going. People at work are really starting to notice and it's only been 4 weeks. I can't wait to see what my future holds.

I am one month after my gastric sleeve surgery and I'm so glad I had this surgery. Dr guillermo Alvarez is a highly skilled surgeon. He greets you when you arrive at the hospital and talks to you in such a friendly way, just as if he has known you for awhile. He explains everything to you before the surgery is done and answers any questions you may have. His staff were all friendly as well. He has English speaking nurses also so there isn't a language barrier. Dr. Alvarez stresses your aftercare a lot, he wants you to be happy and healthy as well. To me Dr. Alvarez is an exceptional surgeon and person as well. This hospital is safe with no worries of going to Mexico.
a highly satisfied patient

I am a Registered Nurse and elected to have a gastric sleeve done by Dr. Alvarez. I was very nervous about having surgery in Mexico-we've all heard the horror stories-and my peers were less than supportive about it. I researched Dr. Alvarez and ultimately decided to use him because he has done so many of these procedures with lower than average complication rates. Even on the day of surgery I was very nervous but he put my mind at ease. One of the other surgeons working on my case had undergone the same surgery with Dr. Alvarez a few years earlier as had his mother and sister in law. That surgeon came with me to get my chest xray and labs and helped ease my mind. I will admit that the hospital stay was interesting and the nurses and the interventions they did on my behalf were different from what we do in the states. For example, instead of putting inflatable leg squeezers on my calves to prevent blood clots, they wrapped my legs in guaze, IVs were taped down to my hand instead of using the clear window dressings that we use here. That being said, the hospital was clean and the staff was attentive.
Post op, I needed to ask Dr. Alvarez for help when I was back home and managing some diarrhea. I emailed him on a Saturday evening expecting to hear back from him on Monday. To my surprise he emailed me back that night and I was able to get rid of the diarrhea by trying the metamucil he recommended. I am so happy with the surgery and with the care I have received from Dr. Alvarez. I would recommend him to anyone else interested in having the vertical gastric sleeve procedure.
