Guillermo Alvarez Bariatric Surgeon MD

I went to Dr. Alvarez for removal of Lap-Band and revision to VSG. I couldn't be happier! In 6 weeks with the sleeve, I had already lost more weight than I ever did with the Lap-Band. My first contact was with Susan. She was very responsive and answered all of my questions. Once I decided to move forward with the surgery and filled out my patient information, I was pleasantly surprised (and impressed) to receive an email with a video from Dr. A about ME! Wow! He actually took the time to look at my info and send me a video. My surgery was on a Friday and I went back to work on Wednesday with no problems at all. I felt great! I never even took the pain medications that they sent me home with. Dr. Alvarez is very caring and I can really tell he loves crafting the incredible sleeve that transforms so many lives. His entire team -- from Rosy who picked us up in the EndoVan in Eagle Pass, Texas, to the sweet nurses, and Drs. Garcia, Garcia, and Salinas -- were all incredible. I felt totally safe and it was a great experience. I highly recommend Dr. A!

I live in Los Angeles and sought help here. My insurance covers the procedure here and I interviewed several doctors, but none of them were warm or personable as Dr. Alvarez. The LA doctors made me feel like I was an invoice. Dr. Alzarez and his staff answered my every question and assured my every worry. I felt genuinely cared for and treated like a person. Their hospital and staff in Piedres Negras, Mexico were top notch. I felt safe and well cared for with constant supervision and thoughtfulness. My surgery was in June and I have already lost 25 pounds and I'm continuing to lose weight. I am grateful for the care I received from Dr. Alvarez!

My story is no different from all the other happy patients. I went to see Dr. Alvarez because a friend of mine recommended him, so I was confident of his abilities and did not concern myself with the location. (been to Mexico before and know lots of ultra capable and educated Mexican professionals - so that was not an issue) This surgeon is the friendliest and most professional surgeon I have ever met. Even more impressive is his staff, what a team! Not only are they all so good looking ;) but they're all so extra accommodating, well articulate, patient and very friendly. Surgically speaking, this was one of my best adventures. I had my GB removed, my VSG and a hiatal hernia repaired all at the same time by Dr. Alvarez and I could not be any happier. I highly recommend him, actually I do not recommend going anywhere else.

Let me tell you about Dr. Alvarez and his fabulous team! First, we met Rosy in Eagle Pass and she took us across the border...Rosy is such a wonderful person and she helped us with our luggage and taking us across the Border. Absolutely no problem going across the border. Then Rosy drove us to Piedras Negras, and its a very quaint little town in Mexico -the people were so friendly and wanted to help you as much as possible! We went to the Hampton Inn which is gorgeous and brand new and we got uploaded and unpacked. Dr. Alveraz thinks of everything and had fresh broth ready for us at the hotel. It was delicious! The next day we had our surgery and Dr. Alvarez did an amazing job! It was the best medical experience I have had...I was not sick for one second! Dr. Alvarez has an amazing nursing staff. They are so kind and bring you whatever you need. We followed the Doctor's orders perfectly for two days! Never experienced nausea one time. When we left, we were so excited for our new journeys! Dr. Alvarez took the time to come and tell us good-bye and encourage us. He is such a positive and uplifting person - you will love him like we all do!
This is the end of my fifth week and I have lost 42lbs! I've never been so excited and appreciative of Dr. Alvarez! The trip is exciting and you know the minute you open your eyes from the surgery that your on a new and exciting journey!

Dr.A and his team are the best. You will never have to worry throughout your stay. I am so glad I was able to go to Mexico and have my surgery. I am almost 5 weeks post op and have lost 27 pounds my goal is 50-60. I had the revision from lap band to gadtric sleeve done.I'm enjoying how much better I feel and looking forward to the day I reach my goal. I am going to be very straight and blunt. The first thing people think is, Mexico? Really? You are going to Mexico? So after finding out that I would have to pay about $25,000 out of pocket to get the surgery done in the US, I started reading reviews, and thought I could afford this. He is not located in Tijuana, so not as scary. And they meet you in San Antonio so much easier to get to. So after a lot of soul searching, I decided to do it. I could not believe how silly I was being scared. You have to watch his videos of the surgery. This is like a hospital in the US. Everyone that I interacted with spoke English just like anyone else. When one person complimented Rosy on how well she spoke Spanish "Rosy, your Spanish is impeccable" she responded in a playful voice, "thanks, it is my native language." It is a lot of fun. More like a vacation that during one day you have your surgery. I went by myself but I wish that I had brought someone with me. Because they get to hang out at the pool, and do all the fun stuff while you have your surgery.

All in all, I am seriously thinking that this was the best place for me to have the surgery. They specialize in just one thing. They are experts. And everyone is so very nice. It is just sad that there is a stigma to overcome.

I had my surgery July 25, 2017. The surgery was seamless and simple. I have been going to Mexico for 40 years. The town Dr. A does this surgery was so lovely, I felt no danger, I saw no army vehicles, just a loving Mexican town with wonderful people. Every thing Dr. A and his staff described to me was 100% accurate. When they came in to give me my med's a fell asleep and woke up with the completion of the surgery. It was amazing. I have had no issues, and lost almost 30 pounds my first month. I feel fantastic. I eat slow, have little hunger and know I have a Dr. who really cares for me. I would recommend Dr. A to anyone. It was worth every penny. There were clinics that were less in money but I would choose Dr. A before anyone. Plus he's quite handsome... And extremely ethical. 5 *****

My experience was outstanding! DO NOT BE NERVOUS of the idea of Mexico surgery!!! I had a small bit of doubt but once we were on our way all my fears went away. We were met by staff who were absolutely a joy to be around! So friendly! Stayed in a brand new hotel at the Hampton Inn in Piedras Negras!! We were driven with care, and day of surgery everyone was so gentle and caring about everything!
This was the absolute best thing I have ever done! I did not have any issues and have felt better in this last month than I have in years!

Doc and all the staff were great from pickup in San Antonio to drop off in San Antonio. Very professional. After over 11k surgeries they have know what they are doing. Mexico was great. The hospital staff was great.

I'm down 25 since surgery and 40 overall. 30 more to goal.

No more gnawing hunger.

No more sleep apnea.

Blood pressure is down. Should find out at next check up if I can quit my meds.

All in all, it was a good decision. Dr Alvarez will take care of you.

It's hard to believe all the hype - but take the leap of faith. Dr. Alvarez is absolutely the best. He and the staff have your comfort in mind - from the moment you are picked up, through your surgery, your stay and your return home. You really feel like part of their family, knowing they are taking the best care of you. I was so impressed after going with my friend, that I didn't hesitate to sign up - had my surgery 3 months later. If you are prepared for a life change, then he's the best surgeon and has the most wonderful team of doctors, nurses and staff, you could ask for to perform this procedure for you!!
