Sugery Day

Apr 11, 2008

I arrived at 6 a.m. and was immediately taken back to prepare for surgery.    They did all the routine vital stats and then put in an IV and pumped me rapidly with 2 bags of water and antibiotics.

I was interviewed by the anesthisiast, a nurse and it seemed like everyone was asking some kind of question.     The doctor came to say good morning and speak to me prior to surgery.     About 7:45 a.m. they gave me something to begin relaxing (I actually wasn't nervous - I was excited!    My husband was a nervous wreck).    My husband kissed me good-bye and they took me to the O.R.     All I remember in there was I wanted to see what an O.R. looked like and I was looking around and looked at the lights on the ceiling - I don't remember anything else until I was in the recorvery room.

I woke up to what I thought was someone screaming my name.    It was the nurse trying to call me to come to.     I was able to see my husband and Mom for a second, I was still pretty out of it.      I was suposed to go to the ICU after surgery for precautionary observation but there were no beds availabe, so they kept me on nurse watch in the recovery room, therefore my family couldn't be with me and unfortunately no one updated my family as to what was going on and they got quite frantic sitting out there wondering what was going on.

Finally at 5 p.m. my doctor said I was doing well enough that they put me on a regular surgery unit, but I had to be by the nurses station for observations.     I got to my new room and they had me out walking shortly after, I didn't walk far or much as I was still groggy.     I slept terrible the whole time I was in the hospital, and actually since I've been hoome I don't sleep well either.

I was up and around, walking on my own the second day, I was using very little pain medication and they said I was doing exceptionally well.     I was very annoyed with all the tubes coming out of me, it was really difficult getting around with them.

On day 3 they took the foley cathiter out (early evening), I was delighted and was shocked that it didn't hurt what so ever.      The next day I was told I could be going home.     I found black and blue marks on my legs that hurt when I walked.    I told them I thought I hit them on the bed rail as I slept horribly the night before.    The doctor looked at them and ordered a test for blood clots - I didn't have them, so I was able to go home.    They took out the pain buster (didn't hurt), they took out one of the tubes (It didn't hurt but what a wierd sensation that was when the 2 feet of tube came out, I did yell out, but more out of surprise than pain), they left in the G-tube and off I went.

The ride home was horrible, I took pain medication as soon as I went home and haven't taken any since.     Had no vomitting, had nauseau once when my husband was frying onions - I thought I was going to pass out, had to go sit in front of a fan for a few minutes.     No othe food aromas have bothered me since.

Yesterday 4/11 I had the G-tube taken out, again no pain.   I actually didn't even know it was out until he showed me.     I was so happy having that thing out, and I actually slept better last night.

I can no prgress to stage 4 diet (soft, moist, puree).   I was very happy about that as I was getting pretty bored with the protien drinks.    My husband fixed me 1 scrambled egg last night for supper and oh did that taste good.    Could only eat 1/2 but it did the trick!!       Going to try some chicken today!
