Hello my name is Steve, and not that long ago I was hiking through Glacier National Park (Oct. 1999.) Now I work seven days on then seven days off as a computer operator and weigh around 385lbs. I honestly don't know my weight because I avoid scales now.
I have always been a "big" guy. When I graduated high school in '93 I was 240lbs and loving life. I went on to college and took on a full-time job and the weight started really piling on. I dropped out of college in '95 and was working both a full-time job and a part-time job. In 1998 a friend of mine came to my work and said we should go out west for a real hiking adventure. By now I was 320lbs and in no shape to go hiking out west. I loved the idea so I spent the next 10 months working to lose weight and building myself up for the challenge. I walked 5 miles at least 3 days a week with a 50lb pack on my back. I also cut back on what I ate. By the time August 1999 arrived I was 260lbs. and we went on our trip to Glacier National Park. This being our first “real” hiking trip we decided to use a guide company. The guide would basically guide us through the wilderness for the 50 mile trek. The day we met our guide I was informed I was the biggest guy they had ever seen attempt what I was about to do. The next seven days were the hardest days of my life but they were also amazing. I did things I never would have dreamed I could do. I finished that hike and hoped one day I would return…
It is now 2009 and I am around 385lbs. My knees, back, and feet bother me constantly. I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and I worry constantly what could be lurking in the shadows health wise. I have tried losing weight since ’99 but have been unsuccessful. I am ready to make a serious decision about my health and my life… I want to be around for my son and wife and if I don’t do something I may not be around for them.
My official start wieght was more than I though it was... 404 lbs....
