Hello from Kansas

Welcome to my OH profile. My WLS journey started in December of 2005 and has been long and tedious but I am now on my way. My surgery is going to be January 29th. I am 32 years old and have been married for almost 12 years to the most wonderful man. We do not have any children of our own but we do have 9 nieces and nephews that keep us quite busy. One of the reasons I want to do this is because we would like to have a couple of children.  I have been heavy all my life. I have never let my weight stop me from living my life but I know sooner rather than later it would catch up with me.

By summer of 2007, I weighed 537 pounds. I was tired of waiting for insurance to cover me. I decided to be proactive and begin losing weight rather than just maintaining it. My insurance is through Aetna and they have a medical bulletin you must follow if ever my employer decided to buy the policy rider. You must have 6 months of medically supervised dieting. I was recommended to “Solutions for Life”. The program was pretty good and I lost a little over 50 pounds with it. I became discouraged when I found out I would not be able to have my surgery there until I weighed less than 350 pounds. Damn if I could get down to that I do not think I would need the surgery, I would just keep losing. I stopped losing at 483 pounds like every diet I have ever tried I lose a little then get discouraged when I stop losing.  I found out in late October that my employer bought the policy rider to cover the surgery (finally!) I started to look around and find someone who operates on larger patients. That is when I found Dr. K in Lenexa . I went to the seminar the first of December. On December 13th had my first consultation where she gave me all the info I needed to gather. My second appointment was set Jan 2nd, but Dr Early did not have my medical records sent to Dr. K yet, so I had to postpone for a week till the 9th.  Finally on the January 9th I met with Dr. K again she set a tentative date but could not cement it in until my insurance approved me. On the drive home I found out Aetna had approved me and my surgery would be on January 29th. I am so very excited!!

I do hope to make friends on here so I can build up a support system. All of Dr. K support groups are in Lenexa and a 3 hour drive for a 1 hour support meeting seems silly. I have lots of family and friends here supporting me but they do not know what I have or will be going through.  I am looking forward to making new friends on this site that understand our struggles.
