Small Victories

Jan 02, 2009

On Thursday, New Year's Day, I went to my MIL's for 'dinner.' That was an adventure I could have lived without. But on the upside I was thrilled that I could button my coat all the way, and I could button all but the very last button on my size 28  blouse--and there wasn't far to go in buttoning that :) . So I'm figuring that the several 30-32 shirts I got this year will be too big. I'll just have to live with it for a while.  But I'm thrilled that after less than 3 weeks, I can close my coat! (Especially helpful when its 10 degrees outside!)

A bump in the road to recovery...

Dec 30, 2008

Well, ended up in the ER last night. About an hour after dinner I went to the bathroom and suddenly felt extremely dizzy, like I was about to pass out. I couldn't even remember where I was nor could I feel if I was sitting or lying down. Also I started sweating alot.  I did have enough presence of mind to think through if I could be dumping from something I ate. I had eaten quite a while before, nothing with sugar, and I wasn't nauseous or anything. I felt too weak to even try to call out to my husband for help.

It passed after 5 minutes or so and I made my way to my bed to lie down. DH was very sweet and concerned but did what he could to take care of me. About an hour and a half after that I went to the bathroom again and had the runs!  When I turned around, the bowl was bright red! I've been on blood thinners since I got home and was told bleeding is a possibility, although a lot better than having a blood clot travel to the wrong place!

I called the doctor and we agreed I'd go to the ER and get blood tests done. While things looked good, I still was getting weak when standing (while they did the BP). Anyway, 7 hours in the ER and I finally got up to a room with a good bed. Wait, wait and more wait. More blood tests at 11. Lots of DR visists, questions etc. No food or drink  :p in case tests or a procedure had to be done. Mid afternoon I hear the 2nd blood test looks VERY good and they are sending me home with prescription iron pills.

Meanwhile I'm supposed to check in tommorw to tell them yadda yadda yadda. Wouldn't you know it? When I got home, the first thing I did was go to the bathroom again. This time things were 'loose' but was kinda maroon. I will tell them tomorrow when I call.  I am hoping that this is just residual blood lose, and nothing new.

My main pressure is being able to go back to work on Monday and feeling good enough to do so! If I can't there's a good chance I will lose the (temp) assignment.

The Universe lined everything up for this surgery to take place in just this window, I am hoping and trusting that even with this bump in the road, that I WILL be ready to go back on Monday.

First Follow-Up Visit (day 8)

Dec 23, 2008

I'm very glad to have the drain and the staples removed. Still have dressing to change, but it should be much easier to do and probably only for another 3 or 4 days. And with the staples out, it seems the incisions are not nearly as itchy.

Also I begin my 3 week pureed diet.  I had a 1/2 a Lite Yogurt earlier, and just now a little scrambled egg. Must say the egg was kind of blaaaah. Another time I'll try making them normal, and then adding a bit of milk and blending. Still soupy egg, not so great. But so far no problem with either, which is good.

Good news--Dr. M. said I could take Tylenol PM if I wanted to, which I hope will help with getting to sleep. Perhaps without the drain it wouldn't be as much of a problem, but the discomfort came from having to lie on my back and I'm not sure the side will work yet, but its worth a shot.

And the incredible news of the week--I LOST 27 LBS!--It's every obese persons fantasy to get on the scale every day and see it drop 3-4 lbs A DAY! Well I know that ride is coming to an end soon, but it has been fun to watch! It helped during the queazy days and pain, as well as reassure me that my body is still willing to LOSE weight. After so many tries in the last several years, it began to seem that my efforts would not be rewarded as I've been used to in the past.

Well, more soon.
