Gosh it has been forever since I've updated this blog.

Things are going great!  As of today, I am down a total of 131.2 lbs.  I was thrilled that I reached onederland by the end of 2008.

It's hard to believe how great I feel.  I have so much more energy and stamina.  I came across some goals I set prior to surgery the other day and surprisingly I have accomplished nearly all.  Those that remain are cost inhibative - but I'll work on those when I can afford it.

Health wise - I am off blood pressure medicine, no longer use c-pap for sleep apena, thyroid medication has been drastically reduced, and arthritis pain in joints significantly reduced.  All blood work has come back normal - no more fatty enzymes in my liver!

I really feel like I'm living again.  This has been a wonderful journey!

Lots has happended since I last updated.  After starting the antibiotics on 7/15, my infection continued to get worse.  I was absolutely miserable.  So back to the doctor I went.  He insisted he thought it was better and I was feeling run down because of just having had surgery.  My husband and I tried to explain to him that it wasn't from the surgery.  I had clearly been improving and this had caused quite a set back for me physically.  He reluctantly agreed to send me to the emergency room for a cat scan to be sure the infection was not spreading in the abdomin.  The staff at the hospital were wonderful and took really good care of me.  The infection had not spread, but the ER doc wanted to either change the antibiotics I was on or admit me for IV antibiotics.  It took nearly 4 hours for the surgeon to return his call to decide what to do.  The ER doc wouldn't let me leave until he spoke with the surgeon.  Finally he called and they decided to change my prescription and sent me home.  Within 24 hours of the new antibiotics, I was feeling so much better.  Since then I've been back to the surgeon for my 3 week follow up.  Down another 4 lbs and the infection is gone from my stomach.

Unfortunately a trip to my pcp the next day confirmed that I now had an infection again on my right calf and the phelbitis had really flared up.  A quick call to an infectious disease doctor and my meds were changed again!  I had a follow up with my pcp today - the infection is getting better, but he said it is going to take weeks for the body to absorb the swelling and blood clot.  So I can't start an exercise program until this is cleared up as he wants me to stay off my leg as much as possible.  So I'll put that on hold and focus on getting the leg better for now.

So far it hasn't really shaped up to be quite the summer I had hoped for.

A bit of a set back today.  One of my incisions started getting really sore and red.  So I went in to see Dr. Myers and I have an infection.  So for three times a day I have to open the incision so that it will drain and I am starting on a course of antibiotics.  The skin is really swollen and tender so I hope the antibiotic works quickly to help this.

I'm down another 5 lbs - for a grand total of 36 (18 since surgery).  Everything else is going pretty well, looking forward to expanding to puree food by the weekend.

Follow up with surgeon next week.

Yesterday was my follow up appointment with the surgeon.  I was pretty apprehensive about having the staples and drain removed.  I am happy to report that was no big deal!

From 6/26 (my pre op appointment) through yesterday, I am down 13 lbs.  I hate to say it, but I was disappointed.  8 of those 13 lbs I lost on the liquid diet before the surgery.  But I realize I am still swollen and bloated from surgery and I'm sure my body has had quite a shock.

Everything is going pretty well.  I haven't been sleeping well, but last night I was out for the entire night.  So far no nausea or trouble getting anything stuck.  I'm so happy that these have not become issues for me.

Next appointment is in 2 weeks.  I'm going to continue to stay off the scale so that I can have maxiumum impact when I go to the appointment.

Here I am, 6 days out from my surgery.  Everything went well, but I had a tough time for a few days.  I guess the surgery was more than I expected.  It really took a lot out of me.  Surgery was Monday and I came home Wednesday afternoon.  I really struggled with it for a number of days.  I had to make myself just not think about it, otherwise I knew I was going to fall apart.  So I focused on what I had to do to get better - fluids, protein, rest and walking.  Finally today I have started to feel more normal again.  I can't really complain, I haven't had any complications so far, but mentally it was rough on me.   But today my outlook has come around and it finally hit me that I did do this for the right reason, my health.  One week prior to surgery I had superficial phelbitis and celluitius on my right leg.  It was beginning to look like I was going to have to postpone the surgery, but my surgeon felt the infection was gone and we could proceed.  He commented to me that the phelibitis was all the more reason to have a IVC filter placed (which I did).  I guess I started thinking about that today, and I realized that by having this surgery I have avoided additional complications from obesity down the road.

I have been so blessed with a wonderful husband and friends who are here for me whenever I need them.  This journey has just begun, but it only going to get better from here on out!
