I am 37 years old and have been overweight since puberty. I have struggled with dieting and living like a yo-yo with regards to my weight, so I decided that it was time to have WLS. I don't have any health issues yet, but health issues run rampid in my family, both on my father side and mothers side, so it is just a matter of time.
I had been considering surgery for about 2 years, but did not know enough about it. At the beginning of this year (2007), I began researching the surgeries that are out there and available. I decided on Gastric Bypass after looking at the different procedures. Then I called my insurance company to find out if WLS was covered under my plan, the good news was that it was and all that was required was 5 years of obesity history. I looked within my plan to see which Doctor's where covered. I found several doctors and after doing my research and asking several ladies in my office who had the procedure done, I decided on the Central California Bariatric Surgery group.
I called CCBS at the end of May and scheduled myself for a seminar on July 11, 2007; at this point I did not know which doctor I would choose. Dr Coirin was the presenter at the Seminar and after listening to him speak and explain the pro's and con's, I felt comfortable in choosing him as my potential surgeon. The next day I called Dr Coirin's office and scheduled an appointment for a consultation. The set my date for Thursday, August 2. A week before my appointment, I received a call that due to a scheduling conflict, my appointment would need to be rescheduled to Friday, August 17th. I was a little disappointed, but figured that everything happens for a reason, so I waited 2 more weeks. On August 17th, I went to my consult and met with the PA (physicians assistant), she asked a few questions off of my paperwork and told me I would be a great candidate for WLS. I spoke to Michelle, she handled all the insurance information, i let her know that i had already spoken to my insurance and provided her a fax number that my insurance company provided me for quicker approval; but before that could happen I would need a phsycological evaluation.
I called Dr Morgan and set up my evaluation for Tuesday September 4th @ 7pm, but had to reschedule to Wednesday September 5th. Dr. Morgan made the experience very comfortable and after speaking for about 30 minutes or so he advised me that i would be a great candidate for WLS and he would be happy to recomend me. He let me know that he would send a report over to Dr. Coirin's office by the beginning of the next week.
Today is Monday September 10th, and I will call Dr. Coirin's office tomorrow to confirm that Dr Morgan's report made it to their office.
I am very excited about WLS and am eager to start living my life for me. I want to be around to see my girls grow up and want to continue to be active with them. Lately, I have been slowing down allot and am starting to feel stress in my knees and back due to my weight, so now is the time to move forward with WLS.
