I meant to start this blog as a pre-op but it just didn't happen. I must say that so far, this experience has been a positive one.
I was out of bed within a few hours of getting into my hospital room. I made sure to get additional pain meds about 30 minutes before I was going to walk. As a nurse who deals with post-op C-section moms, I know how important it is to get moving ASAP after surgery to avoid complications. Good pain control is KEY to getting this done! It felt good to get moving.
My surgery was 8/25 and I came home on 8/27. I didn't have to start my protein supplements until 8/29. Ick. LOL
So far, I have had just 1 incidence of dry heaves & that was on 8/30. I woke up and the mere THOUGHT of protein supplements made my mouth water. I let loose with the dry heaves, tears streaming down my face. That really hurt my main incision on my left side. Funny thing, those heaves with a pouch were easier on me than those I've had with a normal stomach LOL. More like little baby heaves.
So far I have advanced my diet through pureed foods. I have had good luck eating most everything (healthy, of course). I puree things that have too much texture (Morningstar mushroom burger patty) and soups with veggies or skins. I add greek yogurt to almost everything for added protein.
I am also tolerating soft mashed fish. I have tried beef & chicken with no problems, as long as I texturize them properly. I have had small pinches of bread with my soups. I am VERY careful to chew until it is completely liquified before I swallow.
I really don't like the taste of very sweet proteins so i've been experimenting with different brands & different ways of getting my protein in.
I found that walking & getting around became much easier when I started wearing a light support panty (NOT a girdle) I picked up at Kohl's. This was enough to make my tummy not hurt when I walked or slept & I didn't need to buy any special binder.
I have been off pain meds since my 7th post-op day, with the exception of 1 dose before bedtime so I can get in/out of bed and also so I can sleep comfortably on my sides.
I am so excited to have this tool on my journey to a HEALTHY new me.
