Hi,  I went into see Dr. Glass on the l6th and he told me I "had to start eating more and that I should think about good nutrition over weight loss.  I have been doing that since my hair has started to fall out.  It has been really hard to get all the food in that I am supposed to eat since I get a stomach ache about 4 minutes after eating.  I'm eating slow, using mini forks, and eating less than l/4 cup about 2 times a day.  I do get my protein shakes in and of course, I take my vitamin and calcium.  Dr. Glass said I am getting gas from swallowing air, so I am not trying to practice eating without swallowing any air. I seem to have one day where I do fairly well and then the next day I am miserable.  Sometimes if I eat even an ounce, I can not drink for up to 4 hours or I will be sick.  That is not much fun and I am sure Dr. Glass is right about swallowing air, so I am working on it.  I do not know if I will master this or not.  After the week of the l6th I started feeling a bit better.
On March 2lst I actually had a bit of a normal meal...tiny piece of roast, a little corn, some mashed potato and carrot, gravy etc.  It was great.
The weight loss has not been dramatic.  After having surgery on the l5th of December I am now down about 36-37 pounds.  I am also noticing a lot of wrinkles that I did not have a few months ago, but I guess if I get healthier, wrinkles are the least of my problems.
I have been going to water aerobics 3-4 times a week until around the l2th of March when I fell down the stairs, messing up my ankle.  Now I go and walk in the pool trying to strengthen my knee and ankle.  It is coming along well.  I really felt rotten after messing up my knee.  I've had 3 surgeries since the middle of Novemeber and I did not feel that I should have to go through the bad knee thing as well since my knees had been really good before this, but I guess I was just lucky I did not get hurt worse.  I think water aerobics really helped because of the strength training and stretching that I did.
I'm looking forward to a better month in April.  PJ

I'm back from surgery, 12-15-06 and recovering nicely

Dec 20, 2006

Hi, It'sDec l6th 20 hours after surgery.

I am back from surgery.  I got out of surgery sometime after 5 on Friday and left the hospital before 5 on Saturday.  Not bad for a 58 year old overweight chick.  They also repaired a hernia I did not know I had.  The hernia incision gives me more problems than the bariatric surgery.
Dr. Glass was great.  He came to see me on his way to a vacation with his kids.  What a guy!
For the most part my care at St. Cloud hospital was good except for the first night shift. on DEC. l5. ( it is what I was worried about when having surgery near a weekend)   My call button was non functioning and they did not check on me between 2:45 and 4:15.  I removed all oxygen sensors, etc to cause loud beepings, and they still did not check for over 20 minutes.  I found that inexcusable and told them so, reporting the situation to all head nurses. They were apologetic and said, the button had been non-functioning.  That was supposed to be checked.  I also had a few problems with the room...shower not working in room 462, and cold air coming in.  That was resolved.  My last antibiotic drip could have been a severe problem.  They were about to add an antibiotic that I was allergic to.  I asked the name of it before they added it, and told them to stop.
Luckily I did not take a lot of pain killers and I was very lucid.  I told Dr. Glass about the situation and he encouraged me to notify the hospital which I will do.
Otherwise everything has been great.  The first night though, I realized that flannel pJ's and flannel sheets are not a match made in heaven.  You stick to the sheets and can not get out of bed.  With the hernia incision, I was in a lot of pain trying to sit up.  I eventually moved to a motorized chair that I had for my mom and slept in that.  It was wonderful as I could sit up and drink liquids easily.
I've been continuing my walking and 2 days after surgery, bounced around Hennen furniture with my husband.  Yesterday he took me for a quick walk around Menards.  It gets boring walking from the bedroom to the kitchen and there just isn't enough to do.
The insurance claims from St. Cloud Hospital continue to be problems.  Luckily my husband was an insurance investigator for
many years and he is handling all of this.  So far, we have been over billed many times.  I think he found almost l,000 dollars within the last few days that he needed to call about.  Each time they rectify the mistakes, but I have a feeling that if he wasn't on top of all the date of billing and the customary amounts they can charge, we would be out this money.  I am really grateful that I do not have to deal with this as well as recovery.  Health Partners have been very cooperative.
My biggest problem has been drinking Slimfast and water.  I  hate creamy, sweet drinks and right now they are gagging me.  The only thing that tastes good to me is beef broth or chicken broth.  I am forcing myself to drink the Slim fast and have found if I dilute it with water is goes down a bit better. Also warm works better than cold, and I have learned you NEED to be sitting up for half an hour after drinking.
If I follow these rules, walk, and do what the doctor says, I think I will heal well.
Once more, Dr. Glass and his partner at Abbot, Dr. Oaks have been exceptionally caring doctors.  I have had super care from Abbot Northwestern, and I am pleased with the care I have had from Health Partners in St. Cloud.

Hi again on January l8th--5 weeks out and l6 pounds lost

Hi,  It is now January l8th and i am bummed out because I have not lost what I thought I would.  I have lost about l6 pounds since Dec l5th and I am really working hard on exercise.  I have been going to the health club, walking and swimming at least 4 times a week and I recently upped my exercise to include water aerobics.  The weight has been sitting at the same spot for almost 2 weeks, and I feel this is too soon to have a plateau.  I'm disgusted because I know the most weight comes off in the first 2 months, and I do not want to think about having had this surgery to only lose 20 pounds in 2 months....I could do that on LA weight Loss or Nutrisystem.  I am afraid that the low calories have really toppled my weight loss plan causing me to be in a starvation mode.  Hopefully this will all be resolved soon.
I have been on diets all my life.  I'm 5'5, and weighed labout l80 when I was l7.  Naturally I went on a diet and got down to 1l9-128 in my 20's.  Worked out 2 hours a day and weighed l38 in my 30's.  Continued working out and weighed about l48-154 in my 40's.  Had major problems with fibroid tumors and took Lupron in my 50's.  Ballooned up to 200 pounds after about 6 months on Lupron.  Had a hysterectomy and gained another 25 pounds.  Then came back problems, foot problems, and caring for terminally ill parents, so the exercise program was put on hold for a year or two.  For the past 3 years I have been exercising almost daily although at a lesser intensity,  but not losing.  I'm currently 58.
Tomorrow I see the doctor and I am hoping I can have something more than High Protein Slim fast and broth.  I like the broth, but I can not stand the Slim fast.  It gags me!  I am also having problems drinking water of any kind.  I have tried Crystal light and it seems to acidic.  I can tolerate a cup of tea and a cup of decaf coffee during the day, so I have those and broth.  I suppose the sodium in the broth is also contributing to my weight loss stand still, so we will see what the doctor says.  Hopefully he will advance me to eating something other than slim fast.
Yesterday I became upset because one member of the group mentioned she had lost l7 pounds on the 2 week liquid diet before surgery.   That is more than I have lost in 5 weeks post surgery, and I only lost about 6 pounds on the liquid diet which I went on for almost 3 weeks before the surgery.  I guess the thing to remember is that hopefully this time I will not gain the weight back.
So that is my history at 5 weeks post surgery. PJ
