Like many of you here, I have had a long history of being overweight. My weight problems began around puberty and continue to be my Achille's Heel. I worked very hard at losing weight, shortly before meeting my husband. I had lost 75lbs with diet and rigorous excersise that included running. I eventually joined a running group dedicated to larger runners called Clydesdales (men) and Athenas (women). I ran 5k's, 10k's, a half marathon and then the full 26.2 mile marathon. I was living my life as I had dreamed...meeting active, healthy people and feeling the effects of cardiovascular fitness. My body had other plans, though. The long miles of training runs and the marathon itself brought my running bliss to a screeching halt. I injured my knee and hip and no amount of physical therapy or rest was healing me. I had to give up running. The weight came back with my honeymoon pregnancy and I just could'nt figure out how to get back where I was. I was and still am, missing my active, happy and energetic running self.
One evening, my husband (very supportive and wonderful) and I were watching Big Medicine, on TLC. A young woman was being profiled, Her story, physical appearance, weight and age were so similar to mine. I was blown away by her post-op blossoming. She had the lap-band procedure and had reached her goal weight. I turned to my husband and said that I totally identifed with her and was really moved by seeing her transformation. I commented that it would be something that I would consider. His reply was immediate and supportive, "If you want to do it, go for it". I started crying, on the spot. I started researching, online, and found Dr. Pleatman. But, having one more child was first priority. I got pregnant just one month later.
This past January, I delivered a baby boy, Charlie. It has been a great three months and now I am ready for my life goal of ridding the fat suit! I meet my surgeon, March 31st and will have the procedure April 17th.
I am so glad to have found this forum. The individual stories and posts regarding what to expect have really helped me see what lies ahead. I appreciate everyone's openess and honesty. I know I will be looking to your comments, post-operatively.
