MS 150 COMPLETE
Oct 09, 2008
Well my first big athletic goal has been completed. Last weekend (Oct. 4-5) Ip articipated in the Velero MS150 Bike to Beach Ride. Two day and 156 miles later the ride was done. Most of the ride was against a 15+ head wind. While drafting I got caught up in the person in front on me and bit it. So a little road rash in my right elbow and tired legs this goal is in the record books.
Seven Months out
Aug 26, 2008
Well here is a quick update. I am seven months out and down 160 pounds!!!!!!!! The past two months have been slow losing weight because work has had me on the road or out of the country. So bad eating situations and no regular work out schedule. But now I am back home and things are moving again. Work outs are the best they have ever been and getting ready to do an MS150 cycle ride in October. Life is good, Praise God!
12 1/2 weeks post op
Apr 12, 2008
Well I have been meaning to update my blog but life has gotten back to full speed ahead. Yesterday after a bike ride i weighed 318. That is 68 pounds down since surgery and about 120 since December 07. I have really stepped up the gym routine and now am doing 30-45 of cardio six days a week. (running, walking, eliptical, spinning class, road bike) Road biking is quickly becoming a passion. I purchased an 2007 Giant OCR3 road bike. I already have a couple of 20 mile road trips under my belt and am always looking forward to my next ride. My current goal is to get under 300 in May. I am training to run a sprint triathalon (500m swim, 10 mile bike, 5k run) in Aug and then an MS 150 in Oct. I am supposed to be in Israel again this year in June and look forward to taking another picture with the Jerusalem Eastern Gate in the background to update my avatar.
Home from last surgery for a while I hope
Jan 25, 2008
Well, I had my vena cave filter removed today. The procedure was completed without incident. The only problem was spending the day in the hospital. Last night the wife and I walked around WalMart and bought a new digital scale. I am actually a weight now that can be measured by a scale at walmart. most have a 350 to 380 limit. Well last night I was 369.2 and this evening I am 366.8. I feel like I am melting away. Because I was NPO last night until after the surgery today I probably have not gotten in all the fluids I need, however I was hooked up to an IV all day. I can not wait to move to puree foods on Monday. I have been living on protien shakes and yogurt this week. Well life should get back to the new normal next week as I return back to work.
Drains are Out!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jan 22, 2008
Saw the Doc. today and had my drains out. Everything looked good with the exception that one of my drains was still dark from blood. Doctor took me off of blood thinners and said to make sure to stay active. Also on a good note, everyone warns of post op weight gain because of fluids, well praise the Lord I weighed 375 which is down 11 lbs from a week ago a day pre-op.
Back Home

Well I am on the flip side. I am no longer thinking and preparing for wls surgery but now learning to live the reality. I feel great and just trying to get back on the mend. I am anxious to get back up to speed and start working out again. Well I guess I should talk about the surgery. If you are going to have a RNY let me tell you the recovery the first few days is rough but you can handle it. The key is to go in as informed as possible, focus on what you need to do to get off the bed and most importantly be right with God and place your trust in Him.
Immediately following surgery is a blurr which is probably a good thing. They will have you on so much pain med that you will not come to screaming with pain. For me goal one was: get my wits back to me. Recognize what has happened and where am I at. This will take an hour or two. Next is focus on standing up. It will seem like an impossible task at first but once you are up you will begin to 1000% better almost instantly. Your lungs will begin to clear, your will breath better and your confidence will go way up. Next for me was rest and walk, rest and walk. In the three days I was in the hospital I proably walked a mile a day if not more. I was walking on the hour and 3-4 laps arround the surgical recovery hall. I firgured 25 laps was a mile.
Tips: Be nice and friendly to the staff and they will not care about helping you with anything.
In my case I hurt and suffered more the longer I was in bed, and more I was up and about I felt better.
Biggest Hurddle for me: Peeing. I had to stay an extra night and get recatherized (while conscience) because I could not begin to urinate on my own. So if this happens to you stay call, continue to drink and relax it will come back. I started flowing again about 30 mintures before they were going to put the cather in again for the third time. Well, I will add some more in the future because I need to get up and walk around again.

Tomorrow is the Day!

Well here it is. It seems like it has been non-stop doctors the past week. I had a vena cava filter put in Friday. I also had a sleep study at the anastegeologist (sic) request. Even though I snore moderately and only occasionaly I was diagnoises with sever sleep apnea. I am glad I did this because I was the anastegeolosist to be prepared for everything.
After Thanksgiving I become very serious about my preparation for surgery. My hospital was a 400lb weight limit because of the limitations of the cat scan machine. After Thanksgiving I weighed 435. I began a system of alternating liquid diet for 4-5 days a week and eating moderatly on the weekends. I was also doing 45 minutes of cardio at the gym 4-6 times a week. This lasted until New Years Day when I started my doctor prescribed two week liquid diet. Today I went in for a final weigh in before surger at the office. 386. I could not believe it. I had set a goal of weighing in the 380's for surgery and am pumped. Well tomorrow is the day to sign the deal permanently for lifelong health. Before I end I have to give all praise and glory to the one to whom everything is due, My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My greatest motivation to be healty beyond my family and personal well being is to bring all honor and glory to Him. I am looking forward to be a better servant for Him.
