Falling off the wagon
Jun 20, 2008
When I went to see the nutritionist for my two year follow-up she was aghast that I was on the Medifast diet. She said this was the sort of thing I needed to avoid because it did nothing to teach me how to eat and made me rely on artificial food. Well, I suppose she was right. But now I'm floundering again. Last week, I gained three pounds. And this was after starting a regular walking regimen. I walk at least 30 minutes every morning before work. I need to concentrate more on my food consumption I guess. And I've been getting progressively worse about drinking during meals. Gotta stop that. Also, I've been consuming a lot of caffeine. I need to do something. 140 is the number on the scale that scares me and Wednesday it said 138.
Day 5 of the pseudo-Medifast diet
Mar 11, 2008
I can't believe it's been nearly two months since I updated here. Wow. A lot has happened since then.
We went to Costa Rica Feb 4-14. It was amazing. I walked around a lot an didn't eat too badly.
Pam fell on the ice last Sunday (March 2) and broke her wrist. She has a hard splint on it up to the elbow and is going for a recheck on Friday.
Sparky tore his left ACL. In the process of doing a pre-surgery workup they discovered that he possibly has Cushing's Disease. He is going in today for an orthopedic evaluation and a third test to narrow down the possiblities for his elevated alk phos level.
I decided there is simply too much going on to add one more major stressor so I am postponing my PS indefinitely. I feel good about this decision.
When Pam went to the doctor last Monday, she discovered that she weighed more than 300 pounds. That was the last straw for her. When I weight myself on Saturday I was 142 - a new post-surgery high. That was kind of the last straw for me. On Friday we ordered the Medifast package. On Sunday we starting a pseudo-Medifast diet - logging things and using Slim Fast shakes and bars in place of the Medifast ones. At my weigh-in this morning, I had lost five pounds! Pam had lost seven. So I guess it's really working for us. It is so much easier to be on the same plan together.

Regressions
Jan 18, 2008
Due to a conflict with my co-worker's schedule, I've had to postpone my PS until May 22. I'm not completely sure about it, so at least it give me more time to decide.
In the past couple weeks or so I've noticed the return of symptoms I experienced about 3 months after my surgery. By that I mean increased nausea brought on by just about anything and sometimes vomiting. That hasn't happened in a long time. Wonder why that's coming back. Lots of headaches in association with this too.

Surgery, round 2
Dec 19, 2007
I can't believe it's been nearly four months since I last posted. Not much has changed over that time period. After a post-surgery low of 133 I seem to have stablized at 139. The big news is that I have a date for breast reduction (covered by insurance!) and circumferential abdominoplasty (NOT covered by insurance). I'll be going under the knife on March 20, 2008 - just over two years since my RNY. Hopefully, the combination will help my head and back aches, allow me to exercise more and give me a little push closer to my goal weight.
Slippery slope
Aug 22, 2007
Well, it's happening to me like it could happen to anybody who is careless. I'm headed down that slippery slope. After several months of maintaining at above my goal, my weight has slowly started to creep up. I shouldn't really be surprised. I've been careless about my eating habits. It's hard to undo a lifetime of bad choices, and I shouldn't make excuses, but I do anyway. I'm tired today, I deserve a treat. Just one piece won't hurt. Etc, etc, I'm sure you're all familiar with the litany. I should know what to do, but I'd like to solicit some advice. How do you manage to keep on track?
The good, the bad and the ugly
Jul 18, 2007
The good: I lost three pounds last week but I am still at 133. Let's see if I can get past that 131 low mark! I went to the doctor and she decided to discontinue my cholesterol meds.
The bad: My HbA1C test was terrible. It actually went up since last time, which surprised me. I am now on Byetta (non-insulin injectible) in addition to my oral meds. The up side is that one of the side effects of Byetta is weight loss. After a few days, it is already controlling by glucose levels better. Pam and I are going to join a gym in an effort to get a fitness program going.
The ugly: My plastic surgery consult. It never actually happened. I went to the center, checked in and waited for almost an hour without actually seeing anyone. I decided that was a really bad sign and left. No apologies or explanations were ever given.

Haven't updated in a long time
Jul 04, 2007
I'm at 133 and have been between 131 - 135 for the past few months. I shouldn't really complain because, honestly, I'm not following many of the pouch rules and my eating and exercise habits are slipping. I really should get more discipline.
I watched the show "Big Medicine" last night. Very interesting. There was a woman much like me - 5'0" 230 before surgery - who got a total body lift. I am considering it and - though I'm sure they glossed over things and she is half my age - her experience seemed to be a good one. I'm 16 months post-surgery and stable. Maybe it's worth considering more seriously.
I just discovered that I can shop in the juniors section! I'm so excited. This opened a whole new world of possibilities for me. I bought five new tops (one junior) and a cute denim miniskirt (junior). Yesterday.
It's been a long time since I updated. Hope everyone else is doing okay.

Struggling
Apr 18, 2007
Looks like I'm gaining weight again. My partner doesn't seem to think it's a big deal and maybe it isn't. I just can't seem to get this last twenty pounds off. It's frustrating. But...I am down to a size ten. Maybe I should just think of it as a shift from fat to muscle. Not sure.
One year follow up
Mar 26, 2007
I had my one-year follow up about three weeks ago. The surgeon was very happy with my progress. I guess I am. I have lost 85 pounds. I'd like to lose more, but I've been pretty stable for a couple of months now. I am also having problems controlling my blood glucose. I met with the dietician today and I'm supposed to limit my lunch to two carbs. I don't really have a problem except for at lunch. It's very strange.
Fewer than 20 to go...
Feb 13, 2007
I got back from my cruise two weeks ago and I actually managed to lose one pound. Don't know how I did it. Of course, coming back to sub-zero weather and basically no exercise, I gained it back. But now I'm down two pounds from my pre-cruise weight. Yippee!!
I go in for my one-year exam soon. I'm thinking of going on the two-week liquid diet just to see if it resets my metabolism. I'm also going to approach the subject of plastic surgery. I have a lot of excess skin and it's really starting to bother me.
I only have 19 pounds to goal. How is everyone else? It's been a while.
