1993 was a great year....
I am one of 9 million people who have waged the "battle of the bulge". I have struggled with my weight my entire adult life. In September it will be the seventeenn-year anniversary of undergoing a radical life changing surgical procedure. In the fall of 1993, my five foot frame carried close to three-hundred pounds. In one final attempt to find the magical cure to my weighty-dilemma, I underwent gastric bypass surgery.
This, now in-vogue, procedure is being carried out in increasing numbers. Surgical candidates for this procedure are individuals that weigh one-hundred pounds over their normal weight range. Turn on the television and you are likely to see celebrities detailing their surgical adventures, for instance Carnie Wilson and newsman Al Roker.
I am just your garden-variety, average American that has chosen this path. This surgery is no walk in the park, it takes commitment and carries many struggles hidden under the golden promise it sells.
I have lost over one-hundred and sixty pounds. However, it took much more than the surgery to keep me there. In our weight-obsessed society we all want the magical potion to cure our ills- including me. We want to eat what we want and still lose weight or be thin. That simply does not exist. And while most believe gastro intestinal surgery allows you to keep your old habits, it is not a cure-all. Similar to the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle, you must be committed and willing to do the work that is necessary.
I wrote a book detailing my struggles with food and with self acceptance entitled "Fatso- a memoir".
I want everyone to know what to expect for this life changing procedure!
