I have not been overweight my entire life; I guess after eating "fast food" and "snacking while riding the sofa" has caught up with me over the years. When I got married in May of '73, I was a slim 170# and in the USMC; but after 33 years, I had gained a couple of hundred unwanted pounds. Not only was it unwanted, but more importantly, unhealthy. Then a year ago my son and his wife had my first grandchild--a beautiful little girl named "Kaylee". It hit me then, "Would this weight prevent me from seeing her grow up?" I was unable to answer this. Of course I realize a plane could drop onto my house and kill me tomorrow, but it was time for me to do something myself to head in the right direction. After many failed attempts at dieting, my GP suggested this surgery and we started the ball rolling. I only had my surgery on October 9, 2006, and have already lost 25 pounds! But more importantly, I am off all medications, don't have to use my C-Pap machine at night, and just plain feel better physically and mentally. I have had no problems (knocking on wood) and if I continue to follow my doctor's orders, I don't forsee any. I would have this done over if I had to--it's a perfect tool to teach me how to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
