Eighteen days post op and I am doing great! Recovery from surgery was textbook perfect with the exception of some difficulty to the drugs. Everyone was aware of my allergies to both antibiotics and painkillers but I had no idea the reaction would be worse than the actual surgery pain! The second night in the hospital was the absolute worse but the nurses responded as best they could. After walking the halls for 30 minutes, I returned to my bed just in time to receive another dose of benedryl which made me drowsy and able to fall back to sleep. No more meds for me! My doctor wanted me to stay a third night but at about 10am he released me! I was off all meds, showered and dressed for home!
The anti-nausea drugs worked! I was able to make it through the week on clear liquids with their help and haven't needed them since starting full liquids.
At my visit with my surgeon, 9 days post op, he was happy with my progress and removed the drain. I shared with him my difficulty getting enough water and he suggested adding watermelon to my diet. Twelve days post op I did just that - what a pleasant addition. The only thing I did that was kinda gross was chew the melon making it yield all its wonderful juice and I spit out the membranes. I was able to enjoy all the chewing and taste without filling up my tiny pouch.
Third week - soft & moist foods is wonderful! I have been very creative with my recipes. My mind set is firm and it doesn't bother me to be with friends that are eating and drinking. I know I did this to improve my health.
School starts August 15th and I will be ready for another menu change. I am forming habits now to help me through the long haul. Preparing recipes so I have a few additional meals makes meal time less stressful. One can of chicken made 5 enchilada meals - of course, no tortilla. I used a can of chicken chili, added chicken, protein powder, juice from my brother's famous salsa and cheese. Five portions of chili are in the freezer!
My next challenge: a wedding in California on July 30th. My sherpa will be attending with me and supporting my every step of the way.

Tonight was my last 'supper'. Tomorrow I begin my clear liquid fast. My vitamins arrived today and liquids are in the refrig. My pantry is stocked with suitable goods to boost my spirits and appropriate choices. I am down 10 lbs since that first Support Group meeting May 17th. No NSAIDS all week and my knees still feel OK. I would really like never to take them again!
