Hi Micki, I wish I would have known someone so close to me (I'm in Clyde)was having the same exact surgery, you and I also share the same stats...I should say "shared" since you are a post now! Congrats and e-mail me asap! Dawn pre-op, surgery 8/9/02

Thanks for the notes of support I received prior to my surgery. I can't thank each person individually since they were sent to my work email that I can't access while on disability. What I learned from my surgery which you may find helpful: 1) If you go out-of-state for surgery make sure that you fill any post-op prescriptions in that state. Got home with no pain meds (because NY wouldn't fill NJ script) and PCP would only write one for Tylenol/Codeine. We could have gotten that over the counter with a quick trip to Canada! Not what I had envisioned so I was a little grumpy about that, wanted the good stuff to get a full night's sleep. 2) Try not to get your surgery scheduled for July 1st. This seems to be the time that all of the new residents/students arrive at the hospitals. The only problem that I really had was being sent for the leak test. The young, male staff in the fluoroscopy unit really needs some work on bedside manner. I was extremely uncomfortable with my butt hanging out and they didn't even offer a sheet. My IV alarm was going off and they finally called a nurse from my floor at my urging. The morphine pump was empty and that angel put on a new one. I must have laid on that slab for 45 minutes in pure agony. The staff told me to swallow a large amount of the barium liquid. This was the first liquid that I had had since surgery and they should know that we can only tolerate sips. I managed to keep it down, but it was all in all a VERY unpleasant experience. The good news was that I passed and could get some ice water. Most of all I would like to thank my husband, Ed, for his loving care and concern. I couldn't have asked for better support. Thanks, Babe, you are the best. I hope that each of you can have such tender loving care during your WLS experience.

Micki is doing better as each day passes. Biggest complaint is gas pains, followed by itchy staples. Those will come out next monday. The only other problem is boredom with her limited diet. She looks forward to expanding her possibilities soon. How many strawberry protien shakes can one person stand? Had a nice note from Barb B yesterday. In case anyone else is wondering what happened to her, she says she's doing fine post-op. Our best to all

Micki is doing well today. Still feeling tired, but wants to get out of the house this afternoon. Maybe we can go to the boat and have her catch some rays while I putter around. We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Suzanns Lynch. Our hearts go out to her friends and family. There but for the Grace of God. I hope everyone else has had a healthy and happy holiday week.

Happy Independence Day folks. Sorry I didn't get a chance to post an update yesterday, but things were a bit hectic. Micki was checked out of Morristown Memeorial Hospital at abut noon, and we started the journey home to Sodus Point. She was reasonably comfortable since the car is air conditioned, thank God, and things went well except for the semi that shed a retread directly in front of us on I-81. A little bit of damage to the car, but nobody was hurt. When we got home we discovered that our pharmacy couldn't fill prescriptions from out of state, so she was left with no pain killers. After much scrambling I managed to get a call through to her PCP who called in a script for tylenol with codine, so she is covered untill next week when we go back down to New Jersey for her first follow up appt. By the way, the pills are dificult for her because they are quite large. Have a pill cutter handy in case this happens to you. She developed a low grade fever last night which gave us a scare, but the tylenol seems to have taken care of that. She has no problem doing stairs, so this morning she is resting comfortable in her own bed, sipping lots of water and napping a lot. I may have to remind her to drink broth, and eat sugar free jello because she has no interest in food at all. She says the suger free popsicles are OK but nothing to write home about, however the dap of cottage cheese she tried last night seems to have gone well. I hope you all have a cool spot to spend the day. It's a scorcher here already, and it's not even 9:00 yet. A good day for cool showers.

This is to update Mickis' condition. She is one day out from her lap surgery, and doing fine. We were a bit concerned this morning because it took what seemed to be a long time to get the results for her leak test, but all is well. She started her liquid diet this afternoon, and seems to be doing well. Has anybody else had hickups, and itching after thier surgery? I don't recall seeing it here. We'd like some input from others who have been through this. She is off the morphine pump, and taking 2 darvosets every 4 hours. Very few complaints about pain, but she does moan occasionally in her sleep. We have walked the loop around the nurses station a couple of times today. I have trouble keeping up with her with her ever present IV rig. We are hoping she will be released tomorrow to go home, but that rests on the doctors decision in the morning. My heart goes out to Kathys' family and friends, but to those of you who fear, I have only to say that the odds are heavily in your favor. Know that there are a lot of people out here who care and have been through this, and want you to know that it will turn out to be what you have always dreamed.

Micki had her surgery today, about 2 hrs. after it was scheduled, but none the less, it happened. Dr. Abkin was very pleased with the way the lap procedure went and felt good about the whole thing. When she came out of recovery she said she didn't feel as bad as she thought she would, and actually looked pretty good considering the invasivness of the operation. She has crossed over, and is looking forward to a speedy recovery. The doctors are talking about starting her on clear liquids tomorrow, and longer acting pain pills instead of the morphine pump at eight minutr intervals. Could be a very long night for her, but I'm sure that she is glad that she has taken this step. As for me, she is my most precious jewel, and I am so relieved that she seems to have come through this with flying colors. I am emotionally drained and exausted, but happy that she is on her way to the Micki she wants to be. The one that I knew was inside her, but the rest of the world didn't recognize because of her battle with weight. God bless all of you who sent your support, and those who share her rebirthday. Thank you all who contribute to this site because you gave her the confidence to take this step for herself, and me the confidence to support her in this rather scarey, huge step in to change her life.
