Holly, Welcome to this site. Its a great family, a good place to share your heart. My father was in the Air Force/Army back in the 50's and was stationed at Ladd Air Force Base. I was born in Fairbanks. We left and came back to Florida when I was an infant. You have alot of good concerns and some of them can be put to rest by alot of reading and studying some different sites. Start on this one and explore. There is a page devoted to Surgeons.(finding one)There is a site for bariatric surgeons that list them by state.Check out the site www.mywls.com It is really good and has lots of info.Do you have at least 100 lbs to lose? Is your BMI(body mass index) over 40?(it doesn't have to be if you have other health issues) Do you have other cormidities(ailments)besides the back pain?Do you have a history of at least 5 years of attempted weight loss by diets?(You'll be asked to document this, so start trying to remember every diet you've been on.Whether supervised by a doctor or not,how much you lost, how long you were on the diet, and maybe how much you gained back. You'll be asked to submit to a host of tests to prove you are healthy enough to undergo the surgery. I have to travel 4 hrs one way to go to my surgeon. In most cases I will be able to go see him. You don't wait around when you start having a problem. Call them right away. They'll tell you whether to come see them or get to an emergency room. He'll contact the ER on your behalf if neccessary. It can be the start of a new life for you, even though its a serious thing.Good luck.Email me if you have questions or just need to talk.
