I’m not going to bore you with my life story of always being over weight, figured I would use this section to explain why I wanted WLS.     My decision to have WLS was when I saw my mom, who had the RNY, having great success. I had been losing weight over the past year with diet and exercise but after losing 30 lbs. hit a plateau (which has been my life story). After researching diets and morbid obesity, I found out that I fit that mold to the T. I decided I was going to get the lap band since I didn’t have much to loss (a BMI of 40) and didn’t want to go the extreme of rearranging my insides. Went to 2 different WLS seminars and at the second one, a surgeon talked me out of getting the lap band. I then decided I was going to get the RNY especially since I felt I needed the malabsorption component in order to maintain my loss. While getting my testing done, I continued to do research and found that I would no longer be able to take nsaids. I take aleve on a regular basis for shoulder pain. Figured I would just deal with the pain and was hoping that the pain would subside once I start losing weight (which is probably wishful thinking since the next option is surgery). I remembered that my mom had recently mentioned a procedure called the DS, which I inquired about. The DS allows you to take nsaids and for the other benefits I was sold – I am getting the BPD/DS procedure. Had to switch to another WLS program since my original surgeon doesn’t do the DS. I went from one extreme to the next, but after speaking with people and reading profiles there are many that start out thinking one option and move onto one that best fits their needs.
