Dr. Alvarez is an excellent surgeon. He has a good bedside manner. I had surgery with Dr. A on October 13, 2009 and on October 14, 2009, I was up walking the halls and I even felt like I was never operated on, except for a little soreness. I would recommend Dr. Alvarez to anyone who wants the VSG surgery. The hospital is great and they come check on you constantly. My friends and family wanted to check out surgeons who performed the VSG near my home, but after research I would vote Dr. A hands down. He was my first choice, and I made him my last choice, and proud that I did. I wish everyone out their luck in their procedures for weight loss and good luck for a new thinner life.

I did a great deal of research before choosing Dr. Alvarez as my VSG surgeon. I feel surgeon skill and experience, complication rate, infection rate, etc. is an important aspect in choosing any physician. I first e-mailed Dr. Alvarez with my medical history and some preliminary questions. To my surprise he answered within a couple of hours. Dr. Alvarez then asked Lydia, his coordinator, to follow-up. Lydia is amazing! She answered every question, e-mailed all forms and directions, telling me where we would stay, about accommodations for my husband, and what to expect from day one. Things went very smoothly and there were absolutely no surprises. rnrnWe loved Rosey, Dr. Alvarez’s cousin that picked us up at the airport and transported us to each destination. She treats Dr. Alvarez’s patients like they are her family. Rosey took extra time with my husband, taking him across the street from the hospital to show him where to go eat, explaining foods, etc. He really appreciated her efforts. He felt completely safe.rnrn Dr. Alvarez was exactly what I expected; very professional, personable, and very patient with questions he has answered dozens of times. He spends as much time as needed to educate his patients on the VSG procedure and go over medical history, knowing his out of country patients can be apprehensive. Fast forward to that same afternoon: My surgery was between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Surgery went smoothly and that included removing my lap-band. I had no pain and refused pain medications within a few hours post-op. Dr. Alvarez checked on me several times throughout the evening, leaving the hospital at 11:30 p.m. and returning early the next morning. I have never seen such dedication to patients’ well-being. Dr. Rodriguez also came by just to say “hello.” Each of the two days we were there we were encouraged to walk, walk, walk. I am so glad I did as I had no gas pain. This was a real difference from my lap-band in August, 2006. rnrnThe second day post-op we were discharged with post-op instructions and a small Tupperware-type box with all meds, prescriptions for crossing the border, and records for claiming the VSG on taxes next year. There is also a paper to be given to my PCP explaining the VSG procedure. All bases really are covered, leaving nothing to chance for the patient. I know I can call Dr. Alverez or Lydia anytime with questions. rnrnI would choose Dr. Alvarez and his team again without hesitation. They do not take an impersonal approach with their patients. They take each case as an individual that has trusted them to care for and help move toward a life altering surgery and healthful lifestyle. I will always be grateful to each member of the team, but especially to Dr. Alverez.rnrnAnnieZrn

First of - reading all the reviews and testimonials about Dr. Alvarez on here and his video channel really set the bar high for my expectations of him. Every single testimonial I read about him really gave you the idea that he is a phenomenal doctor and person. Meeting him, I was not disappointed in the slightest. He was so friendly right off the bat, and never once did I feel uncomfortable. I instantly trusted him to safely get me through surgery, and he did - with much success. His whole staff is incredible! If you decide to work with them, you'll meet his incredible coordinator Susan - I fell in love with her friendliness from our first conversation. I called and called with the tiniest questions and she was ALWAYS available to answer them - no matter how minuscule they seemed to me. The whole hospital staff was also so approachable; One of the nurses that stood out the most is Christie - even though it wasn't a problem for me, she spoke English very well and was able to calm my nerves right beforehand. Dr. Alvarez, Dr. Rosales, the entire nursing staff, and Susan, of course, instantly made me feel so at ease with such a major procedure. rnrnDr. A practicing his field in Mexico should be of no concern - he knows what he is doing! I lost 21lbs on my pre-op diet and 65 lbs post-op, which will be 3 months as of October 6. Totaling a loss of 86lbs in 4 months. I'd say I'm pretty happy with my results, and it'll only get better from here!rnrnI researched high and low for a good surgeon that I'd feel confident about. Through the entire process, I never once doubted that Dr. A and his staff genuinely cared about their patients. Choosing to go through with the procedure and choosing this surgeon in particular go hand in hand with one of the best decisions I've made thus far.

Dr. Alvarez and his his nurse Susan were great to work with throughout the entire experience. Susan provided all the information I needed to make an informed decision regarding my WLS choice. When I did meet Dr. Alvarez, I immediately felt relaxed. He listed to my concerns, addressed my fears and explained everything that was happening. He has a great aftercare program. I am an RN in the United States. I have worked with many different physicians. I would pick Dr. Alvarez hands down when it comes to explaining the procedure, bedside manner, surgical knowledge and approachability. My only complaint would be the lack of English speaking staff in the facility where the procedure was performed.

I had VSG surgery with Dr. Alvarez on July 30th, 2009. I chose Dr. Alvarez because of his extensive professional training, experience, proximity to Dallas, positive patient reviews, and price. I admit I was nervous about having surgery in Mexico and then returning to the U.S. without being physically closer to my surgeon. My fears were groundless and I am convinced that this was the best decision of my life. The whole process went off without a hitch and my recovery was amazingly easy. Eagle Pass is an 8 hour drive from Dallas (this is the city where patients are picked up and then driven across the border for surgery). I had surgery on a Thursday and drove myself home on Saturday without any problems. My recovery has been amazingly easy. I have lost alomost 25 lbs since my surgery and feel healthier than I have in a long time. I am begining a new chapter in my life with so many more opportunities because I don't have to worry about my self-image, diabetes, or heart disease. I have talked with a couple of people who had their surgery in Dallas that had serious complications that I never had to worry about. If you are consideng surgery with Dr. Avarez, I whole-heartedly recommed him and his staff. They are very accessible after surgery to answer any questions that arise. They do such a good job of providing post-op information that most questions are answered (I just asked for additional protein drink recipies)!rnIt is no surprise that Dr. Alvarez is the keynote speaker for the upcoming OH event in Dallas!! Congrats Dr. A!!! See you there!

I had VSG surgery performed by Dr. Alvarez on 8/17/09. When I met with Dr. A in his office, I was very comfortable talking to him. He makes you feel like a person, not some object or number. He went over all the paperwork and answered all my questions and concerns. Dr. A has strict rules for aftercare that he stresses before the surgery. He is very professional and caring.rnAnd yes ladies, he is very charming and handsome. The surgery went smoothly, no complications. Dr. A has an execellent surgical competence, and bedside manner. I was nauseated after surgery, medications were given promptly to alleviate the nausea. I slept most of the first day, but the next day I was up and dressed and walked several times, no pain or soreness, which really surprised me. Dr. A performed the swallow test and I passed, no problems. I really wanted to go home at that point, but Dr. A thought it was best if I stayed another night. I would highly recommend Dr. Alvarez to anyone wanting to get the VSG. I am so happy I looked on Obesityhelp.com and found him. He has received a huge amount of nice reviews. This is one of the best decisions I have made in my life time. rnI would like to thank Dr. Alvarez, Dr. Rosales, Susan-coordinator, Rosy-driver, Christina-nurse, and all the staff at the hospital. These are a great bunch of people and they help you through the whole process.rn

My first impression of Dr. Alvarez was that he was very kind, down to earth, experienced & educated... that made me feel very comfortable. Over time, my impression of him did not change; he is trustworthy thru & thru. His office staff were so friendly, helpful, sweet & funny (Susan, Rosie, Cristina, Dr. Rosales & all the nursing staff). There was nothing I didn't like about him. Future patients should know that they are in good hands with Dr. Alvarez. He emphasizes aftercare; clear instructions on medications, vitamins, diet, etc. He gave me his direct contact info, inviting me to ask any questions I may have after surgery, which I very much appreciate. He has a very detailed, structured aftercare program that's outlined in a printable booklet. I rate Dr. Alvarez 10 out of 10. His surgical competence & bedside manner were both great. I have had no complications & no pain since having the vsg surgery. The God's honest truth is, I feel as though the universe moved for me to find Dr. Guillermo Alvarez & I have been blessed!
