***11-26-03 I am 24 and have been overweight my whole life. Last year I saw an ad for the Bariatric Treatment Center online and decided that I had wasted enough time trying diets. Both of my parents are super MO and have serious health problems because of it. I am starting to have joint pain and am afraid that if I don't do something now, I will be in the same situation. I am concerned that my insurance will not approve me because I don't have a lot of co-morbites and have not tried prescription weight loss medications. I have started preliminary steps with Dr. Pearce.

***1-28-04 Well, I was scheduled to have my physical/consult w/Dr. Pearce today. However, they cancelled my appointment and the next day they can get me in is Feb. 25th (it was either that or wait until April!). I am sooo disappointed. I was hoping to have my surgery on spring break, now that's not possible. I did go see the Psychologist, though. He told me that I have dysthymia, which is cronic depression. He suggested I start seeing a counselor and get some anti-depressants. My PCP gave me Lexapro and I have been on it for 3 weeks. The pills don't seem to be doing anything so far. When I went to see my PCP, they told me that my tonsels might have to be taken out and that my blood pressure was the highest it has ever been! I go back on Feb 4th for a check up to see if this 3rd round of anti-biotics helped the tonselitis. If not, then I guess I will be having surgery during spring break after all.

Congrats to my friend, Sandy, for her surgery date! 2-12-04

***2-13-04 Yes, it's FRIDAY THE 13TH! BOO! Anyways, I had my check up with my PCP about the tonsels. They put me on blood pressure medicine and referred me to an ENT. I was able to see the ENT the next day. He seemed really flaky...wanted to talk about everything else but my tonsels. He took a swab of my throat and told me to have a sleep study done. The swab came back with strep (he said I am a strep carrier) and a staph infection!!! I'm not sick so he told me not to take any anti-biotics for it. I had my sleep study last night. I don't know the results of that yet. Had to wash my hair 3 times to get all of the goo out! :o) Still waiting on my consult with the surgeon. I'm going to see if we can do the tonselectomy at the same time as the RNY (I've heard of it being done).

Sandy's surgery was yesterday and it went fine!! (I must say I'm quite jealous!) ;o)~ Have a great day!

***2-26-04 I went to my consult yesterday. I didn't actually get to talk to Dr. Pearce, but I did see him in the hall. He stopped what he was doing and came over to shake my hand. My blood pressure was the highest it has ever been at 149/108. This worried me because I have been on the blood pressure meds for 3 weeks now. I asked the PA, who did a history and physical, if he thought the Dr. would do a tonselectomy at the same time, but he said he didn't think it would be a good idea. I need to call them later to see if I should go ahead and have the tonsels take out before or wait until after. I am concerned that the Dr. won't want to do the RNY with them in. They are supposed to call me back when they hear something from the insurance co. I will call them in a week or so to be sure that the paperwork was sent. The good news is that I have gone from 380 on Feb 4 to 359 as of yesterday! (that's 21 lbs!) (I stopped drinking things with caffeine & sugar or carbonated on Feb 2nd.) Well, that's all for now. I have an appt with my PCP for my blood pressure on 3-3 and with the ENT to get the results of my sleep study on 3-17. Will update after them.

*** 3-4-04 Just a quick update. I went to my PCP for a follow-up on the blood pressure meds yesterday. She increased the dose from 25mgs to 50mgs. I also called the surgeon's office. They told me that I must have my tonsels removed before they will do the RNY. :o( Well, TTFN!

*** 3-17-04 Happy St. Patty's Day!! I saw the ENT this morning. He said I have moderate sleep apnea and will have to go do another sleep study to calibrate my new C-PAP. Also, my tonsels still appear to be infected, so he did another culture. Will have to have more antibiotics if the test comes back with bad results. He said that he wants me to be on the C-PAP for 2 weeks before he will do surgery (and, of course, I can't have an infection). Because of my age and weight, he wants me to stay overnight in the hospital (it is normally done outpatient). I am tired of dealing with this. But since I still haven't heard back from the insurance, I guess it is OK. That's all I have for now.

*** 3-23-04 Well, bad news today. I didn't expect to hear from the insurance this quick, but I was denied today. They said I need more documented weight loss efforts. I know that I can't have the surgery before the tonsels are out, so this doesn't set me back too far, but it is still so disappointing. I did get my culture results back and they showed no sign of infection! I just have to see about signing up with Weight Watchers or something like that so I can give them their precious documentation. Feeling pretty depressed right now.

*** 3-31-04. Saw my PCP today. My blood pressure was normal! They put me on a diet program (1500 calories per day). Will have to go back in 1 month. Had my second sleep study (titration study) on 3-25. It went better than last time. I went through 3 different masks before we found the right one! Don't know when I will get my C-PAP. TTFN!
Pre-Diet weight: 370

*** 4-15-04. I went back to the ENT yesterday. We have set a date for the tonselectomy (5-11-04). He finally gave me a prescription to get the C-PAP. He had to wait for the result of my titration study before he could do that. I am now waiting to hear back from the med supply company. The stupid diet is going okay. I am not hungry on it but I am having trouble remembering to eat snacks at work. I have absolutly no hope that this is going to work and worry that it is a complete waste of time. Will update after check-up with PCP to see if I have lost.

*** 4-30-04. Well, I saw my PCP today and guess what...

I HAVE GAINED 3 LBS SINCE THE LAST VISIT!!! :o(

I am sooo disappointed. I thought that I had lost some since my jeans were fitting better. So now I have 5 more months of this wretched diet that IS a waste of time. And to top it all off, I had to postpone my tonselectomy because I STILL have not got my CPAP. I ordered it on 4-15. If I don't have it by Tuesday, I will have to put it off until June. I'm sorry about all of this whining, but I don't have anyone here to listen to me vent. I hope everthing is going better for all of you! Have a wonderful day!

*** 7-12-04. Wow, I didn't realize it had been so long since I last updated. I had my tonsels out on 6-1 and it was horrible. I never would have done it if I had known how much it would hurt. Glad I didn't have both surgeries at the same time like I wanted. I'm half way through my stupid 6 month diet. It is the same old type of rollercoaster ride as always. One month I gained, the next I lost, then I gained again. The next appointment I have for this (the 4th month) is scheduled for 8-2. Hopefully, I have shown some improvement. Will try to update after the check-up. ;o)~

*** 9-7-04. Well, I have had my 4th and 5th appointmenst with my PCP. The doc isn't happy with my weight loss, though I am following the diet and exercising as much as possible. Just more proof that I need the surgery. So, I just have one more visit, then I can resubmit to the insurance!
By the way, I went with mom to her seminar on 8-31 with Dr. Floyd. She has her appointment with him on the 13th.

*** 11-1-04. Well, I finished my 6 month diet with no weight loss at all. I turned in my paperwork to Kenny @ Dr. Pearce's office and he submitted it on 10-18. I gave the insurance co a week before I called them. They said they hadn't received the paperwork. I called Kenny and he faxed it to them that day (10-25). Today, I got a letter from the insurance co (dated 10-27) saying that I AM APPROVED!!!!!!!!! I am scheduled for pre-op testing on Wed, 11-3. This is very interesting because it is my mom's surgery date and is also the one year anniversary of my seminar with Dr. Pearce. I am hoping to have my surgery on 12-1. It shouldn't be a problem to get that scheduled. Anyways, I will update when I have completed the pre-op stuff and have an actual surgery date.

*** 11-9-04. I finally have a date!!! December 16. I went to my pre-op stuff on 11-3. They did an EKG, blood draw, chest x-ray, and echo on my heart. Mom also had her surgery that day. She was in the hospital for 5 days. She has had a lot of pain but is getting better every day. I can't wait for my surgery. I have another appointment scheduled on 11-16. I don't know what it is for. Will update later.

*** 12-9-04. Well, it is one week until my surgery! I have had my lab work and leg ultrasound done and am ready to go. I am not really nervous, just anxious to get it over with. My mom is doing well. She was down 52 lbs as of her 1 month check-up.

I can't wait until I am on the other side. I have spent so much time waiting for this to come. I can't even begin to picture how different my life will be after I lose this weight. I want to ride a rollercoaster again and maybe even a horse. I want to fly without worrying about the seatbelt. I want to be able to walk through the mall with my lil sis and keep up without panting. I have nightmares that I won't lose any weight. I am so tired and depressed all of the time. I feel that this surgery is the only hope I have. I know that there are a lot of people out there in exactly the same place as me. Best wishes to all of you.

*** 1-13-05. Well, I am on the other side now. My surgery went fine. I was in the hospital for less than 48 hours. My first week was pretty rough. I went for my 2 week check up on 12-30. I was down 31 lbs!!! IN TWO WEEKS!!! I am only weighing at the Dr's office, since I don't have any scales at home. I have had some problems with nausea, but otherwise, I feel fine. I have had some problems getting enough protien and fluids, but I suppose everyone does. I went back to work on 1-10. My next Dr visit isn't until 1-27.

*** 2-22-05. I was a little disappointed with my Dr. visit on 1-27. I was down another 11 lbs, for a total of 42 lbs down in 6 weeks. I guess after loosing so much the first 2 weeks, I was expecting about the same in a month. But, then I remembered that 42 lbs in 6 weeks is GREAT! So enough whining about that. Unfortunatly, I got the flu 2 weeks ago. I don't know whether it is sinus drainage or what, but for the last 1 1/2 weeks I have been so nauseated, I can't stand to eat anything. I finally went to my PCP on Friday but He couldn't find anything causing it. He gave me some anti-nausea prescriptions and an antibiotic and sent me home to suffer. I have my monthly appointment with Dr. Pearce's PA on Friday, so I will talk to him about it. Good news is that I got to weigh on Friday! The results are listed below.

*** 3-15-05. Well, after a month of feeling sick, I am finally fine. I believe a lot of it was due to being malnurished and dehydrated. They did put me in the hospital over-night on 2-25 to increase my fluid and potassium levels. Anyways, I am doing great now. My next appointment with Dr. Pearce isn't until 4-1. So, I will update my official weight then. I am down enough that I can weigh on regular scales, but I am not sure how accurate the number is. Not much else to say now except that mom is down 90 lbs now. Will update after Dr.'s visit. Happy St. Patty's Day!!!

*** 4-18-05. Went to see Dr. on 4-6. He said I was doing fine and I don't need to go back. Nothing new to report other than that I have really saggy skin now!

*** 5-20-05. Not much to say... I'm doing fine. Weight loss has slowed down some, but will pick back up once I make time to excercise more.

*** 11-15-05. I am down 145 lbs in about 11 months. I am thrilled. Have gone from a 30/32 to 18/20 and some 16/18! I still need to lose quite a bit. I have a lot of skin that needs to be removed, so now I am looking into possibly having a lower body lift, etc. I am going to do some research and then call my insurance company to find out what I need to do.

*** 2-22-06. Well, I am over a year out. Been really stressed about work and school (I've gone back to get my MBA). I know that I am not eating the right things, but I simply don't have time. I will definately have to work on that. The insurance company will absolutely not cover any plastic surgery. I will just have to live with this or wait until I can save enough money. (Don't know if I will ever be able to save for that.) I got a survey from Dr. Pearce's office that said my starting weight was 406, not 380. I don't think the survey number is right. However, if we go by that number, I have lost 192 lbs! I tell everyone 166 because I believe that 380 is my starting weight. Both numbers are great, though. I have unforetunately become obsessed with my new scales. I never even owned one before the surgery. Anyways, that's all that is new.

Beginning weight (as of surgery date) 380 (or 406???)
weight 12/30/04 349 down 31 lbs
01/27/05 338 down 42 lbs total
02/18/05 327 down 53 lbs total
02/25/05 320 down 60 lbs total
04/06/05 310 down 70 lbs total
04/18/05 305 down 75 lbs total
05/01/05 299 down 81 lbs total
(finally under 300!!!)
11/15/05 235 down 145 lbs total
02/22/06 214 down 166 lbs total
