Well, I was 40 years old when I decided it was time to do something for myself. A very wise friend said that to me one day and I finally heard loud & clear. I began researching GPB surgeons July of 2005. By the time I went on a 2-wk vacation in September I knew I was ready to make the decision. I found Dr. Martin because of a co-worker and contacted his office in October. By January 2006, I had met all the criteria that United Healthcare required. January 19th I got my approval letter for my surgery and then scheduled my procedure for Feb. 28th. It took me longer to make the decision than it did to actually complete the steps to get approved. I am so glad I made this decision. What a wonderful tool. I've learned so much in the past 8 months already. My weight the day of surgery was 302 lbs. As of October 16th, I weight 201 lbs. My goal weight is 150 lbs. so I have about 51 lbs. more to go. I am so very grateful to Dr. Martin and his staff and Sycamore Hospital. They have changed my life in so many ways! I now have a new outlook on life and am very excited about all the new possibilities out there. From riding in an airplane without an extension to exercising without getting out of breath! What a difference 101 lbs. makes. I have tons of support around me, which has made all the difference. And I made a great friend, Tammy, who had her surgery the day before me. What an inspiration she is! I can't wait to experience so many new things.
