Evergreen Hospital

"The only thing about the surgery that was a little odd was the hospital didn't seem exactly on track with Dr. Montgomery's instructions. He stresses walking right away, which he had told me ahead of time. Well, the evening of the surgery I tried to get up but I needed help because of all the stuff I was plugged into- IV, catheter, and both legs wrapped with inflatable compression cuffs plugged into air compressor. So I start to get up, and got a bit nauseaous, and they put me right back to bed & gave me anti-naueseua medicine. Then in the a.m. I tried to get up again but the orderly told me to wait until after shift change. I really couldn't do it on my own, I was literally tied to the bed with all the accessories. Then Dr. Montgomery came in and I got the impression he was upset I wasn't up and about- as soon as he left I got a dose of blood thinners and they helped me out of bed. I just got the impression the hospital staff weren't quite clear on the expectations for this surgery. Someone even asked me if I was going to be getting pureed foods, and I was like no way! I also remember one time my IV sprug a leak, it was dripping steadily & I had pressed the call button for the nurse but it took a while for someone to come around, at least ten minutes but I'm thinking it was more like 20. That concerned me a little because I didn't know if it was a safety problem. However the staff seemed really on top of giving me meds, I've never had so many shots in my life, literally. But other than that the hospital stay was fine, the folks were very nice. I had packed a bunch of stuff to do, like magazines and knitting but I didn't touch any of it, I think I felt a little out of it from the morphine. Music would have been nice. Also, I wish I had gotten my take home pain medicine either ahead of time or filled at the hospital, it was a drag having to do it on the way home. "

Kevin Montgomery

"I first met Dr. Montgomery on 4/16/03. I was impressed because he spent over two hours with me, mostly just talking about the surgery, finding out what I knew, what my expectations were, and basically making sure I was well informed. He answered the two questions I was most concerned with regarding the actual procedure; that is that he performs a proximal bypass, meaning he only bypasses the minimum about of intestine, and he transects the stomach, which helps avoid SLDs down the line. I also did some research and found that Dr. Montgomery was Cheif Resident Surgeon while doing his residency at UW Medical school, so I feel very good about his skills as a surgeon. Dr. M was personable and friendly but not overtly warm & fuzzy, which was a good balance for me. Dr. M is also very concerned about follow-up care and stressed he believed it was very important to the overall success of the patient. The only thing that sat funny with me was when we were discussing patient support & I said something along the lines that each person knows their own body & he said "They THINK they do" which rubbed me a bit wrong as I have had many experiences trying to get Drs to listen to what I was saying about my body regardless of what they thought things should be. The office staff seems very nice and overall I am looking forward to having my procedure done with Drs. Watkins & Montgomery. Also, I have heard good things about Evergreen hospital- I hear it quite posh. ;-) "
