My story is probably very similar to a lot of other people’s stories. I had been battling my weight since my early 20′s, never liking how I fit into clothes or how out of shape I had become. I found myself in my mid-30′s with high blood pressure, borderline blood sugar issues, insulin resistance, PCOS, sleep apnea, and severe depression. It was clearly time to take a big step to lose the extra pounds. I was tired of being exhausted by doing everyday activities. I was tired of not being able to do some of the things that I used to love. I was tired of the person in the mirror not reflecting my true self. I was tired of being tired.

Like so many other overweight people, I had tried all the diets out there, and had periods of successful weight loss. The weight always returned, though, and was kind to bring extra friends along when it returned. So I was almost 300 pounds with a bundle of comorbidities, and something just clicked. I knew I would need help to make weight loss a permanent thing, so after doing several months of research I decided to have VSG surgery.

I no longer have issues with insulin resistance, blood sugar, or high blood pressure. My sleep apnea is gone.  I have completed the Couch 2 5K program, and can actually run for 30+ minutes at a time. I have run in three 5Ks, and am signed up for more. The old, unhealthy me never dreamed I could enjoy exercising so much. I have more energy to play with my son and spend fun time with my husband. As a family we are more active and eat much more healthfully than we ever have before. I like the person that is beginning to emerge, and I am proud of the work that I am doing to maximize the effects of my sleeve. There is no doubt in my mind that this surgery has saved my life.
