Failed VBG + GERD
Nov 28, 2007
Hi Friends,
I had an open VBG done by James K Weber in 2001. Within one year I had gained all but 10lbs back. I only lost 40-45lbs to start with.
I was very disappointed and have to take some responsibility for the overall weight gain. I learned that I could no longer eat meat, pasta or rice without getting "stuck" and having pain. So I gradually began to eat foods that slid down easier. I was hungry and it was easier to grab chips and soft foods that I could get down without issue. Salad works good but fish, chicken an all meats are not friends of mine any more.
I hate that I spent 20,000.00 (self-pay) on this and did not have success. It's embarrassing especially when at first things seemed to be going well.
If I had it to over again I would not have the VBG, I would have the RNY. It takes just as long to recover from an open VBG as it does from an open RNY! With a higher chance of success, but I was afraid of the higher risk of complications.
Fast forward to today 11/29/2007. Today I find myself facing a scope next week ~ why? Because my Dentist insisted I go in and be checked for severe GERD it has eroded my enamel on my teeth! Yes, I've had stomach issues but wrote it off to choosing to have the VBG done. I figured that when you choose to have this type of surgery then you better not complain when you have gastric issues - part of deciding to have this done.
I did not realize the long term GERD is very serious and can cause esophageal cancer. Now I will find out what, if any damage has been done. If there is significant damage done I may have to have the VBG reversed.
Test results will tell. I'm not sure that would be so bad anyway. Since I long to be able to eat meat and other foods I haven't been able to for seven years.
Although I can't help but think that this might be my chance to have a revision done to a RNY.
Insurance is an issue however. Since I was a self-pay in 2001 I don't think I have much chance of having any insurance coverage. Unless it's proven I need some kind of GERD corrective surgery. I have a fairly low BMI (31.8) and no other documented co-morbidities.
I'd love to hear form others who have failed VBG's and have developed GERD.
I am in the process of contacting my original Surgeon to see if he can help. I am confident in his skill but wish he had encouraged me to have the RNY originally.
