In November of 2008 I decided to pursue having WLS. I have been overweight my whole life and after seeing a friend make the decision for surgery I decided that I wanted to pursue it. I was in college 6 1/2hrs from home at the time and while home on break I went to see a bariatric surgeon. I attended the group sessions and decided that this is what I wanted to do.

My first appointment with the surgeon was in January 2009. Sadly I found out the insurance I had did not cover weight loss surgery. I put the thought in the back of my mind and continued on with my life.

In the meantime my brother and sister-in-law went through weight loss surgery and I was there with each one of them through their journey. They are both strong people and have done amazingly with their weight loss.

in 2011 I graduated college and moved to start my career. In September of 2011 I once again sought out WLS. I was in a new area and went to the group meeting with a new surgeon. I found out that my new insurance covers WLS!! However, there was a 12 month diet requirement and I had to lose 10% of my weight. At first I was crushed thinking of all that time and that being on diets never worked for me before so why would it be any different now. After some soul searching and talks with my brother I decided that a year was going to come one way or another and if I didn't start the diet now I would be looking back on the year thinking I could already be done with it.

Well a year came and went. I did a 12 month plan with my PCP and I am so glad I did. I started the diet in January of 2012 and in January 2013 I had lost 10% of my weight!!!! I contacted my surgeon right away. It took some time to get the blood work complete and transfer all the paperwork from my PCP and on April 13th 2013 my claim was submitted to insurance. It took 6 really long weeks for them to come back with an answer but it was a YES!!!

My surgery date is scheduled for June 24th 2013
