Hi, I am 54 yrs old. I am a survivor of thyroid and prostate cancers . Both cancers were cured by being removed (cut out). So I am cancer free at this time which is great news. I weigh 347 lbs.I have been over weight my entire life but carried my weight well, i.e., I never looked like I weighed that much. I have tried every diet known to man only to regain weight. The last time I lost a significant amount of weight was for cancer surgery only to regain another fifty lbs. Before that I lost 60 lbs and then my gall bladder on the cookie diet.
My family and doctors have always been concerned about my weight. I am diabetic, have sleep apnea and high blood pressure. I was waiting for that magic pill to be developed but it hasn't and I have developed knee problems, which once again can be cured by surgery.
My 16 yr old son was given a gift of life because his kidneys failed and his aunt donated a kidney to him and he is doing great thanks to God and the prayers of everyone. He was given a wish from the Make A Wish Foundation which should be given to him in November of 2009 and I want to be there for him and be able to do things with him and in my condition as it is now I would not be able to. I have been looking at weight loss surgery for the last 3 or 4 years and have been to many seminars on it and was always convinced by others that I could loose weight on my own and because of their attitude I rejected WLS. I have now decided that it is in my best interest for the short and long term to have it. I have chosen the Realize Band because it is the least invasive and can be removed if needed. My family is against it but I am doing it for me first, and then for them. They think it is the easy way out. Since making my decision I have went through all of the evaluations and passed them I am now waiting for a surgery date. My Dr. will be Dr. J. Taylor M.D. out of the Barix Clinic in Ypsilanti,MI. I am hoping for a surgery date in late June or early July so that I am recoverd fully for the trip.
