As many do, my story starts with a history of dieting (starting around age 8) that turned into a hatred of scales as I watched the numbers go up and down--then up and up. A few years ago, I hit 300 lbs and have climbed steadily to 330 since then. In the past year, I've come back down to 317 in preparation for surgery.
Initially, I was determined to get the duodenal switch surgery, but have decided that the additional risks are not worth the possible gain--and since my BMI is under 50, I am going to get the RNY. While I am afraid of dumping, I am more afraid of a lifetime of sever gastrointestinal issues; I know the issues are uncommon--but so am I! And my doctor and I decided that I would have the same success to both surgeries...so I'm going with the RNY.
I have been "lurking" on these boards for a few years, and am just now posting a profile--I met with the doctor today and got a tentative surgery date (assuming the final approval goes through with my insurance company) of October 28th! So now it has gone from theory to reality...and I am getting geared up for all the changes to come.
I have recently taken up deep water aerobics/exercise and I LOVE it! For at least an hour a week, I play in the pool and don't think at all about work--and get a good workout at the same time!
I will do my best to post details and updates as I can! Please email me if you have any questions.
