2007 I am 56 years old, 5'4" tall and entered the hospital on March 26, 2007 at 324 pounds. I was not heavy till my 20s. I was married at 18 (1969) and had two beautiful children and a hysterectomy by the time I was 20. My marriage sucked. And the eating began. Blah, blah, blah. By the time I was divorced, 16 very unhappy years later, I was 220 pounds. I stayed at that weight forever. I was an active healthy "fat" person. I had no mobility problems. I walked and swam and exercised (occasionally). In 1998 I started taking insulin and gained huge amounts of weight. Mobility started to become a problem, and I just got fatter and fatter. By 2004 I was over 300 pounds and at times used electric carts to get around (places where I had to walk more than 50'). I was an absolute mess. My joints hurt. My sugars were near impossible to control, and I have neuropathy and have had laser surgery (eyes) because of retinopathy, and I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. All of which I took multiple meds for. I also had severe sleep apnea, one of the worst cases they had ever seen. I stopped breathing 120 times per hour. No wonder I was tired in the morning. |
