I was never skinny my entire life. I was, however, healthy. I never wanted to be skinny and have always believed that weight was an arbitrary number on the scale. I started to exercise and lift weights as a teenager and found that I really enjoyed it. I also love the water, so I participated in every water sport I could. I continued this until I was hurt in a freak accident in 1994. I was put on bed rest and gained pounds a day. From that day forward, I have had an on going battle with my weight.
Four years ago, I quit smoking. This compounded the stuggle I was having with maintaining my weight tenfold. I don't exactly understand why this happened. I watched the weight pour on while I was counting calories trying to keep it from happening. I finally gave up.
From that day forward, I tried to diet my way back to healthy, with only limited temporary success. I have never felt so helpless as I have these last few years. I hit a point where I had symptoms of Insulin resistance which caused me to gain even more weight.
I have learned a few important things during this turmoil. My number one warning to everyone is:
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS DANGEROUS and is found in almost everything that does not state it is ORGANIC. Without going into all the scientific terms and explanations I have read through as I tried to find out what causes Insulin resistance, I will say that High Fructose Corn Syrup may well be responsible for the rise of Type 2 Diabetes, Childhood Obesity, and Obesity in some Adults. This CHEMICALLY MODIFIED corn syrup does not send signals to your brain to indicate that you are full, so you will keep eating. Even though the Corn Growers association is trying to run a campaign right now about how HFCS in "moderation" is not bad for you and how it is "natural" because it is made from corn, the problem is that your body does not trigger the chemicals to indicate you are full when injesting HFCS so ... you will continue to be hungry. You will NEVER find it in anything that is labeled "Organic" because the FDA has strict guidelines as to what is organic. The words "all natural" have no such guidelines what so ever, so you could label Red Dye #40 "all natural" and no one could challenge it.
CIGARETTES are not just dangerous to your lungs and heart, but also your metabolism.
WEIGHT IS AN ARBITRARY NUMBER ... I believe that people should worry more about being healthy, than being a certain number on a scale. I know that muscles are heavier than fat, so you could weigh 160lbs and be fit or weigh 140 and be fat.
Now, I would like to be healthy again. After going through all the options with my own physician, she referred me to Dr Dickinson who, on January 15, 2009 performed my surgery.
