Now...introducting DS

Oct 22, 2008

I've now met with Dr. Inman instead, and she agrees that I could be a good candidate for DS. I have to start the six months of medically supervised weight loss, and my first appointment is November 6 with the new bariatritionist on staff, Dr. Adrienne Gomez.

I have CIGNA and I have to impress not only my employer, who excludes all WLS efforts, even if medically necessary, but also CIGNA. I can imagine there will be a lot of letters, photos, and groveling.

I was unofficially told about a lawyer in town who may also be able to help.

Lord, sometimes I hate that I work for an insurance company. If I didn't have my friends and my therapist to keep me up, sometimes I wonder where I would be now.

The first setback

Jul 25, 2008

Today I made an appointment with Dr. Evanson's office. It is set up for August 18th. Then, I got a phone call from the hospital saying that my insurance had an exclusion which prevented WLS even if I was morbidly obese. No way, no how.

At least until the end of this year, I am on CIGNA insurance through my employer, and I sincerely doubt they would purchase the rider which allows surgery. Why? Well, my company bargain shops every year. And I expect they would probably put the same type of exclusion in even if we went back to United Healthcare, which has approved some surgeries.

I don't mean to be bleak, but it is looking like I would have to pay for this myself. I CAN pay for it, without financing, but it would mean dipping into a stock account. That's the worst case, I guess. I was told that Anthem insurance sometimes offers policies which cover WLS.

Of course, I find this all ironic, as I work for a very large insurer.

I'll figure it out.
