I had Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in May of 2000. Six weeks after my surgery something went terribly wrong. I started vomiting and couldn't stop. I was unable to hold down water nor anything else. After several days of this, we drove to see my surgeon. An endoscopy revealed that i had blown all of my staples due to the vomiting. I was suffering from severe dehydration and peritinitus seemed inevitable. I wound up back in the hospital. Upon release, i was on clear liquids for several months, hoping that I would heal and that my staples would epithelialize. After awhile, my surgeon quit returning my calls. At that point i figured i was very lucky to be alive. I had lost about 50 lbs while on liquids and slowly started myself back onto solids. Until October of 2008, i had not had another endoscopy. I was uncomfortable most of the time.. in pain a good bit of the time... When I decided to find out what was going on, an endoscopy showed that i had a area in my stomach that was covered with mesh that was used in my original surgery. After nearly 8 years, it had still not grown into the lining of my stomach. Part of the mesh is kind of floating off of the covering. I have a hernia and a low functioning galbladder. We started on a search to find a surgeon. No one would even consult with me due to the previously botched surgery. I finally found a surgeon in San Antonio that not only agreed to meet me, took one look at my scope pictures and started explaining how he would perform the corrective/revision surgery. I'm now on the countdown to my surgery, which is scheduled for March 19th in San Antonio. I live three hours from there. His plans are to repair my stomach and my hernia, and if time allows he will remove my galbladder. Otherwise, he will need to go in at a later date to remove it.
