I was always the chunky girl in school, and unfortunately that carried over into my adult life. I remember being 20 years old and having a woman tell me that if I didn't lose weight before I turned 21 that the other girls would make fun of me in a club/bar atmosphere. I am not sure that ever happened, but I do know that it made me even more self conscious than I already was. I would like to think that people see me for my inner beauty, my strength to overcome my personal obstacles, my intelligence. However, as I have learned, the world can be a very cruel and heartless place filled with people who only care about what size a person wears.
I tried hard to decry those people and surround myself with positive and caring people. However, when those people starting commenting on how unhealthy my weight had become, I knew I needed to do something. I tried every diet known to man - and without long-term success I found myself looking into more drastic measures.
Of course I had thought about WLS for a few years, but up until December of 2006 had never seriously considered it. I attended the informational class and had a consultation with the surgeon's office in January 2007. I played by my insurance company's rules and was approved in Sept. 2007 for Roux en Y.
