After struggling with my weight for over 30 years, constantly thinking that the first 35 years of my life I had no weight problems, and that anyway now I would go back to my pre-obese weight of 108 pounds, I came to a dead stop in that way of thinking when I participated in a community play and saw the video tape of this extremely overweight person with my face.  I have tried every conceivable diet there is, ending at one point eating 3 Jenny Craig dinners at a sitting.  I had heard of the lap band on TV commercials and found out where close to my home in Florida , I could have this done.  According to the commercials, it was easy as 1 2 3.  I found out that even before you could be put into contact with a doctor who did Gastric Surgery, you had to attend 2 seminars.

One seminar was almost 4 1/2 hours long that went into great detail about the many obesity surgeries.  I thought the lap band was right for me and I signed up for the seminars at our local hospital in Florida .  After sitting through 4 hours of extremely informative information, I was told that Medicare (I am 68 years old) would not pay for lap band or any other kind of Gastric Surgery until I had been under a physicians care for 18 months of weight loss program.  Even though I had been to Weight Watchers sometimes for as long as 8 or 9 months, because a Doctor did not weigh me, my past experiences with program weight loss were not accepted.

Of course the hospital had a remedy.  I could start with their program.  This, needless to say, devestated me and brought back all of those horrible memories of trying to do something to control my weight, and failing.

I spoke to my daughter who was the only person I had told my plan to, and just almost offhandley mentioned, “I have to get this done, even if I have to go out of the Country”.  I asked her if she would go with me, and her answer was a quick yes.  I immediately searched the internet and found a travel service that had recently been highlighted on 60 Minutes, as well as an article that was in the May addition of AARP.  I contacted these people immediately, we spoke about 3 different countries, and my daughter and I chose .  This decision was made May 15, 2008.  My surgery date was June 17, 2008.

After my physician from reviewed my medical history, he contacted me suggesting that I have a Gastric Sleeve done instead of the lap band.  I am in the process of recovery from the surgery and this is the beginning of my journey.  I hope should I live another 30 years; I will be a lot happier and content with myself.  Today is June 20, 2008
