9 years out
Mar 04, 2015
It has been 9 years since my gastric bypass. I am so very thankful for this surgery. It has truly changed my life. If I could just advise about anything post op it would be to be very careful not to let food overtake again. It can be fairly easy to go back to eating the wrong things. I am constantly working on my eating and my emotions. I have not been walking like I was and have eaten too much sugar. I have managed to keep all but 30 lbs of my original loss off, but am trying to get the 30 I regained back off. Sugar has become such an addiction for me. I work harder now than ever and without the surgery that never would have happened . My fibromyalgia is under control for the most part and the arthritis is also better than before surgery. I have had 2 more surgeries since the cancer surgery but bounced back quite well from them both. Never would have been able to have either one had I not had this surgery. I still have alot of excess skin but have decided not to have the surgery to take that off. 5 surgeries have been enough for me
4 years yeah!!

I lost a total of 150 lbs. I gained back 29 lbs from Dec 08 until Jan of 09. In Dec of 08 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My sister had just undergone a bilateral mastechtomy in Nov of 08. I went to Mayo in Jan of 09 and had a bilateral also.
It was good news as had not traveled out of the breast. I did not have to have any chemo or radiation and am on medication for 5 years. Our mother died of breast cancer 13 years ago. I think I was suffering from depression for most of 2009 and just ate what I felt like. Since Jan I have lost 11 of the 29 lbs I gained back and am continuing to do well with my eating. I have gone back to mostly protein and protein drinks. I do zumba 2 times a week and will soon add a 3rd time. I never would have been able to do this without the surgery.
I can go to almost any store and buy my clothes. Still some styles I cannot wear because of the excess skin. I am still thinking of having it taken off, but have to have other medical things to think of first. Also the cost of the surgery.
I would definitely have this surgery again. It has turned my life around. Thank you Dr. Bruderer and staff for helping me with my new life.

I can now run up and down my stairs as much as I want or need to. Before surgery once I was up I stayed up. It was just to hard.
I also started working out at the Y at least 3 times a week, I try to get there more often but sometimes life gets in the way.
When asked if I would do it again, you bet.
