A little update!
Jun 24, 2010
Its been about 3 months since my last entry. I really suck
at this whole 'blogging'
thing!
Oh well, what can you do
?
To date I've lost about 70lbs
. Not too shabby. I'm determined to hit the 100lbs lost mark by August. I'll be six months post-op then. If I don't hit it, then I'll aim for my b-day
in September instead. I've got plenty of time.
Since surgery, I've lost weight (as mentioned), begun exercising
on a regular basis (got tennis elbow too!!!), lowered my bp, lost my father to cancer
, and started working on my pitiful yard (13 trees, lots of leaves!). I've also worked hard to take my supplements/meds daily and get in my required protein and fluid.
I can't say its always easy, cause it isn't
, but I know what I have to do and the support given to me has been wonderful. I've taken the advice, tips, and tricks to make this easier for me. So far so good!
The DS life is a great one, but filled with mandatory responsibilities. Just like Peter Parker's Uncle Ben said, 'with great power
comes great responsibility'. No truer words can be said.
I love my DS and love the lighter feel of less fat weighing me down.
The best is yet to come!
I'm going to knock this fat right out
!

!Surgery Day
Mar 23, 2010
It has been a month or rather almost 5 weeks since my surgery (surgeries). I didn't expect to take so long to post about my experience, but concentration post-op took a bit of time for me to strengthen again! So, on with my tale...
On 2/17/10 I received the call to be at Duke by 5.45am because my surgery was set for first thing Thursday morning 2/18/10. I was super psyched and ready to go. We left home in the wee hours of the morning with plenty of time to spare. In the surgery prep area, everything went as previously discussed. My first IV was placed, the 2nd to be placed while in the OR, I was asked repeatedly what surgery I was having, and Dr. Sudan came in to answer any questions/concerns and to sign my belly with the surgery type and his signature. Next thing I knew, I was wheeled into the OR, I sat on the table, and was out like a light. When I woke up in Recovery, I felt no pain at all. It was weird. I asked them if I had had surgery because I felt just like I did when I walked into the hospital. The pain hit a few hours later, but the PCA was a huge help in calming that beast. For most of Thursday, I slept off and on, and had my vitals checked. Thank God for the Foley! Friday morning, I was feeling great and ready to get up and walk. So, I did. The Foley was removed and I was up and moving. But I had a strange pain. I can't really describe it, but I had a tenderness I should not have had. Then I developed a fever, my BP went down, but my heart rate increased. Friday afternoon/early evening I had a CT scan done. I drank that nasty crap, cocked my head to the side and watched it flow out of my belly and into my abdominal cavity. To say I was in shock would be an understatement. Deluded denial would be a better assessment. Everything was explained to me by both Dr. Sudan and Dr. Hanly (who discovered the leak). I heard, but I didn't hear.
So, off to surgery #2, just two days after my initial surgery. I can't say I was scared, because I was still in shock
. Everything happened so quickly. Unlike the first surgery, this one was rough for me
. I was later told that it was very difficult for them to find the leak. Fortunately, I selected a highly skilled surgeon who knew more than one way to solve this crisis. It was found and successfully repaired.
Originally, that Friday, we were discussing sending me home on Sunday. Once the leak was discovered and after surgery to repair it, I was in no shape to even walk at first. Upon awaking in Recovery, I couldn't breathe or catch my breath. It was a horrible experience. But eventually, I was able to go back to my room and I slept.
Thinking back now, I wish I had stayed a bit longer in the hospital, but my son's 16th birthday
was on 2/24/10 and I really wanted to get home to my family. So, I was released. 3 days later I was back in the hospital again for a week and a half stay.
Now the hardest thing for me is nausea
. I wake up with it and sometimes go to sleep with it. I developed an tolerance for Zofran and it stopped working for me completely. Figures, one of the strongest anti-nausea meds, and it does nothing for me. LOL!
It took a while for my strengthen to pick up, and even though I am not 100%, I do feel stronger everyday
. Eating is a fun challenge. I can nibble this or nibble that, but I'm trying to stick to the try a new food a day thing. This has helped me to discover that my fave broccoli is a no go, can't do noodles, yellow cheeses or any type of tea or water, and I can't tell you how much baked chicken sucks now!!! My lifesavers have been chili, pork rinds, ground beef, Schwan's chicken breast strips, eggs, tuna, and bacon. Not too fond of shrimp anymore, I hope that will change, I love the little buggers. Tilapia almost killed me! What sucks is it was so dang tasty, but my tummy said it was a no go! I have yet to try deli meats, but will soon. I have an idea with salami in mind.
One good thing, I've lost about 48lbs since surgery.
Can't beat that with a stick.
Now, I just have to watch and wait to see if an abscess will develop. Supposedly, its inevitable!

2nd Pre-op Appointment, Done!
Feb 10, 2010
Since my original pre-op appt was over 30 days old
, I had to re-do everything. So, we trudged to NC enjoying the remnants of the past weeks snow, embarking on a day of tediousness. To our surprise
, not only did it only take a few hours, but we had ample time to get our shop on! I met with Dr. Sudan and when he realized I was just re-doing everything from before, I only had my vitals taken, signed some paperwork, and set my 3 week post-op appointments. In and out in less than an hour! Then off to the main hospital to pre-register and talk with anesthesiology. Here's where it gets really weird, in this vast hospital, I actually got the same exact people that assists me in Jan! From registration, to anesthesiology, to the lab tech...and each one remembered me! How's that for a kick in the pants
!!!!
I absolutely love traveling
to NC. Granted, we have many of the same stores here in VA, but the sales, prices, and taxes are different and less expensive. So, not only do I get a chance to mingle
with grown folk (who are outside of my area), I get to shop!
Did I mention the outlets and the mall that is right down the street from the hospital? EHEHE
Yes, I'm so going to enjoy my post-op appointments...

Feb 04, 2010
My tentative date of 2/18/2010 has now become my official date. It took 24 hours from the time my info was sent and received by the right department for my approval!
Isn't that grand!?!?!?
Turns out, since Jan 8th, my surgery info was traveling through Anthem only to be faxed to the proper department on 2/3/2010. How's that for a delay
?!?!?
Fortunately, when one of my last calls
generated the right information and I was happily informed that everything was finally headed in the right direction.
So, 2 weeks from now, I will be on the losers' bench, legs a'swinging and happy as hell!

Just Another Day
Jan 13, 2010
Today was supposed to be my surgery day. Unfortunately, as a result of insurance issues (late packet
submission), my day was postponed
.
Hopefully
, later today I will have another date to plan for. But for now, I'm in limbo.
On the upside, this extra time will give me the opportunity to continue with my vitamins, walking
, and prepping my family
.
I've already increased my Vit D, Calcium, Vit Bs, and still working on getting my iron better. I was fortunate that my levels were originally normal, but a low normal. My goal has been to make them at the least mid-range normal to high normal.
So far so good
!
Now if I could just get the staff to answer their damn phones....

Seminar Time
Jul 23, 2009
I should be getting ready. I should be in the shower, handling Vickie's Secret
, getting dressed, and preparing myself for a day of travel.
But NOOOO, I'm determined to take time to document this momentous day!
Not only am I almost finished with the 6 month supervised diet, I am headed to NC for a mandatory seminar.
I am going to see Duke's bariatric center.
This will be an all day adventure, but I am looking forward to getting this done and meeting new people.
2.5 hours up and 2.5 hours back (give or take an hour or 2).
No worries though...have water, will travel!!
ETA: The trip was great! It did not take as long as was originally thought. It took us about 2 hours to get there and roughly the same amount of time to get back home. I am soooo glad I live in the more Southern part of VA, it helped.
Now, onto stage 2, the 1st visit!

Like many others, I waited and waited... waited and waited.... and then waited and waited some more.
Seems I am a great waiter
They gave a date. Then like the evil creators they are, they took it back
.
No word was left. Not even a real hint as to why. They toyed with my fragile little emotions and to no avail I still had to wait.
A year went by, and being the faithful innocent that I am, I still waited
.
Then another date was announced.... and this time it was definite
.
With the date loooming, I knew I had to tie up loose ends. Put all of my stuff, business and personal, in order. Upon that date, I had to ensure that I would be available.... just in case.
The date has now come and gone. I have been successful in availing myself to all the possiblities and free time humanly possible. I even set aside enough funds, just in case.
After what felt like years and years of waiting, its available and
I finally did it.
I bought the Sims 3
and I LOVE it!!!!!
