5 Year Anniversary

Aug 06, 2009

WOW!  It's hard to believe it's been 5 years already!  So much has happened since then.  After the RNY came the THR, college and 2 more kids!

Aside from a stricture at 1 month post-op, I just recently had some blood issues.  I found out in May that I am severely anemic & low in Vitamin D.  I take iron & Vitamin D pills daily and now get B-12 injections monthly (it was weekly for the first 6 weeks).  All my labs look good now.  Besides that, I've been perfectly healthy!

I decided to go back to college this Fall.  I'm not stopping this time - not until I get those letters (R.N.) after my name!

Life's been a lot better now that I can actually participate.  I didn't realize just how much my hip kept me from doing.  I can play tag with my kids and dance and do yard work for hours!  None of it would have been possible if I hadn't had the WLS.  I needed to lose the weight before they'd replace the hip.

I'm at my all-time low today.  129.6 pounds!  I have a BMI of 22.8 which puts me right in the middle of "Normal".  I probably have 5-10 pounds of skin hanging, but I don't care.  I wear shorts, dresses or whatever.

All is well.  Quite well.

FOUR YEARS!

Aug 03, 2008

Well, it's been four years now since I had my WLS.  It seems like it was a lifetime ago.  Since my last post so much has happened!

I decided to drop out of the HIM program 2 weeks into it.  I knew I couldn't do school full time with a newborn.  Either my education or my family would have suffered and it wouldn't have been fair to neither, nor myself.  I'm glad I dropped out now since HIM isn't something I'm very interested in now.

My handsome little boy (Issac) was born on October 3rd, via c-section.  It's hard to believe that he'll be TWO in 2 months now.  He loves to watch Diego and is saying and doing new things every day!  He has the most beautiful, heart-melting blue eyes - just like his daddy.

Of course, nothing in life is ever easy and it seems I often get blind-sided.  On February 20th of this year, I had baby #4!  Rebecca was also born via c-section.  She too has those beautiful, blue eyes and they light up at the meer glance of me.

I also just started a job this week, for the first time in over 11 years!  It's not a "career" type of job, but I hope to make a career out of it.  At the orientation, I told of having WLS 4 years ago and the 12 others in the room was just amazed.  They all made comments about how awesome it was that I'd managed to keep so much off despite having 2 more children since.

Since having the babies, I did put on some weight.  With #4, I got up to 183.  I'm now down to 151 and with help from SparkPeople.com, I know I will continue to work towards my goal of 130.

I still suffer from hypoglycemia due to the WLS and pregnancies, but know how to control it (AVOID SUGAR!).  I still avoid carbonation and only have sugar on occasion.  I feel bad for folks who actually pushed themselves in order to be able to drink soda again.  THERE IS LIFE WITHOUT SODA!

All in all, I am very happy with how my life has turned out.  As I have mentioned in the past many times, I am grateful for having the surgery.  As I speak to others in my area who have also had WLS, it appears that my concerns for my surgeon were warranted.  He actually got kicked out of a hospital and from what I can tell, rarely practices (if at all) now.  When I hear the horror stories associated with him, I truly believe that I am lucky to not only be alive, but not have a lifetime of complications like so many others he cut on.
