Thanks to Ken Bolduc, a manager in my construction business, for pointing me toward the benefits of weight loss surgery. He had lost a lot of weight himself the old fashioned way and is now slim and athletic. I may never be called athletic but I'm now convinced that physical activity is important to keeping the weight off and both contribute to a long life.

I have some challenges I'm hoping the RNY procedure will fix. I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes about 7 years ago and started on insulin last year. Its taking more and more medication to keep my sugars where they need to be. Also, I was fortunate to discover two arterial blockages before anything happened to me. I had angioplasty and two stents were inserted. My last stress test come out clean but I still have elevated blood pressure. If all goes well each of these conditions should improve significantly as a result of the surgery.

Running a business is a consuming thing and I've been doing that for almost 30 years. My typical work week has been 60-70 hours. I'd have to say that I put customers and employees ahead of family all too often. As far as my health is concerned, that was the last thing I thought about which is why I'm where I am today -- 100 lbs overweight due to habits I failed to change. Its not like I didn't try. I've been through all the major diets. I've had a wellness coach, a personal fitness coach, I've been in support groups, therapy and hypnosis. I've overcome them all and kept adding on pounds. Now, at age 59, change has to come to my life.

My family is excited at the prospect of a slim Dad. My wife, who has no weight problem, is supporting me although immense will power runs in her family. She doesn't really get it. She can take off 10 lbs just by saying by when she'll do it.
