One week away...

Jun 20, 2009

I am one week away from my surgery.  I am so excited that I would perform it myself, if I could.  My wife, Angela, had the same surgery (RNY) last Monday.  She is doing VERY WELL!!!  Came home Wednesday; went to work this morning (Saturday).  Although her job is not strenuous, I was still afraid she was not ready.  Luckily, I was wrong!  She feels great and has lost 17 pounds since Monday.  Granted, she is not really fond of the Isopure, but she is able to "choke-it-down."

The mere prospect at the possibilities that this surgery could possibly do for me are what excite me the most.  Possibly no more diabetes!  For this, I would crawl from McMinnville to Centennial (Nashville).

Kudos to Dr. Houston and the crew at Centennial for all they did for Angela.  My goal is for us to grow old together and enjoy becoming a mutual burden on society in our old age!  lol

Getting Ready!

May 30, 2009

I am excited about my upcoming surgery.  I go Monday morning to meet with the exercise phys. and have my pre-operative tests done at the Centennial Medical Center Bariatric Surgery Center.  I have been trying to get ready for the surgery by losing some weight (to shrink my liver).  I don't know how much this helps me (other than not weighing as much...) but, I do know that it makes it easier for the surgeon.

I have suffered from osteo arthritis for about 30 years.  Due to this, my ability to do aerobic activities had diminished over the years.  It had literally gotten to the point that I walked with a cane ON A GOOD DAY!  Unfortunately, these were "few-and-far-between."  Lack of exercise, my sedentary lifestyle, and food choices (and ATTITUDE) caused me to become a diabetic.  This led to autonomic neuropathy and a heart attack in 2006.  I went through the "life sucks" period, hating myself, hating my job, not wanting to be around ANYONE.  I thank God for my understanding and sympathetic wife, Angela.  She is my gift from the Almighty!  After I stopped feeling sorry for myself, I decided to do something about it!

December 18th of 2008, I started a three day procedure called manipulation under anesthesia (MUA).  Each day they sedated me (level II, conscious sedation) and stretched all of my joints and broke loose all of the existing scar tissue in the joints from the arthritis and gout and redistributed it, allowing the body to absorb it.  I walked in the first day with a cane on one side and my wife holding me on the other.  I walked out the same day without the cane and not having to be supported.  I could hold her hand and SMILE!  The following two days, they did the same thing making sure that every joint was mobile.  After fourteen weeks of post-MUA physical therapy; I can now do 15 minutes on an elliptical machine and 15 minutes on a recumbent bike.  (The first time I couldn't make it 2 minutes on either.)

On Dec. 18th I weighed 311 pounds.  Angela got me to try a mineral cleanse and shake program with her from Isagenix.  This, along with a lifestyle modification program done by my medical bariatrician, has brought me down to 268 pounds.  I feel GREAT!  I look forward to the surgery mainly due to the fact that it will have a GREAT IMPACT on my diabetes; hopefully alleviating the need to inject myself with the Byetta (3x daily at present).  I have already made the eating changes and attitude changes thanks to Dr. Blankenship's program (my bariatrician).  The key is neuro-cognitive reprogramming.  Replace the maladaptive behaviors with appropriate ones.  This and the mineral cleansing, http://onlymac.isagenix.com/  , has made more difference in me than I can ever say (and it be believable).

I have learned so much from the OH site.  Due to this, I don't feel that we are going through this alone.  Angela is having the same surgery on the 29th of June!  Thank you all for your courage, selflessness, and support!
