Memphis Regional Medical Center (The Med)

"I felt like I was in the wrong place the morning of the surgery no one was around to be seen. I had to take the word of another surgical patient that I was in the right place. I was in no mood for a goose chase. It was an area in a hall with about 10 seats. It seemed very strange. My husband said that he had a hard time catching the cafeteria staff not sitting and eating with a closed sign blocking the entrance. Luckily, UT Bowld Hospital is connected and had a fantastic cafe. And the only other thing I could have possibly complained about is that 70% of all windows have a view of a block wall. There were 3 windows that I recall that had any kind of view at all. Obviously, a quality medical treatment is far more important than a room with a view! "

"I had my first consultation with Dr. Lloyd Hiler on March 27th, 2002. He was everything I had hoped for, very approachable, ready to make a move. With everyone else envolved with this process, it is nice to see someone with the same urgency as I have. The staff was friendly enough. I traveled for 3 hrs. to get to his office (Nashville to Memphis). I had to fast for a blood test, so I arrived 1hr. early to have blood drawn in order to eat something for lunch. I really believe in first come first served(except for emergencies, of course) The office was empty and they assured me that I was next to be seen as soon as they started taking patients back. The office soon filled with others. I overheard a patient say she had thought that her appt was for 1:00 and the receptionist said,"No, it says three right here." They took her before me along with about 2 others. My appt was at 1:00 and by the time my 15-20 minutes with Dr. Hiler was over, it was pushing 5:00 and I still had a 3hr drive back to Nashville with rush hour traffic and now it was time for Dinner. I didn't get home until 9:30. My husband and I were very irritated. Dr. Hiler said that since I had my predetermination test (sleep study, diabetes diagnosis, psyc exam, colonoscopy) prior to this visit, he say no reason why we couldn't have this surgery as soon as May. He said to work on the girl who schedules. The girl who works in reception told me that It could be as long as six months to schedule this surgery. She also advised me against phoning my insurance company. She said that they may deny me if I was pushy. I have a feeling she was hinting not to push her as well. Well, I have a scheduled surgery date, July 18th.**** My, how the worm has turned! Fortunate for me, my date was postponed. My new surgeon Dr. Madan said that Dr. Hiler no longer would preform gastric bypass surgery. Nevertheless, I am greatful that Dr. Madan is preforming my surgery laproscopicly. I understand he has been highly sought after and that he is also a lap kidney transplant surgeon, also. I really like him, but, I liked all the other surgeons I have met also. It is hard to explain, I don't feel as anxious and I feel a strange sort of contentment. With a shorter hospital stay and recovery time, it is laproscopic is certainly more desireable than an open proceedure. I don't know of anyone who has been more impatient than me. I have decided to slow down a little bit and be thankful everyone else has been looking out for my best interest! "
