3 days Post-Op RNY

Jul 21, 2012

So I am here on my couch watching "Dirty Jobs" on Netfix. My 15 y old daughter is sitting next to me eating the dinner that I prepared for my family. I am still quite full from the 2 shrimp that I ate for lunch 3 hrs ago. Of course I have been sipping fluids all day so my pouch has never really felt empty. I am currently sucking on a Flintstone Vitamin, my second required for the day.

I guess I will go back in time and review what has brought me here today.

On Wednesday, 7/18/12 aroung 1:45pm, I was wheeled into the OR of Maryview BonSecors Hospital to have my RNY Gastric Bypass. The journey to that OR had  taken about 2 months, (I know, incredibly fast) and I was more than ready. The excitement and fear had dissappated and I was just READY.

I woke up 5 hrs later in my private room on the 5th floor of the Bariatric Weight Loss Center. My Nurse, Dan was coaxing me into a recliner. I don't remember much, only my friend Latwanna snapping photos and flashed going off around me. I think it was around 8pm.

About 9 Dan and Chrish (a nursing student) got me up out of the recliner and ushered me into the hallway. These were the first tiyy steps to toward the rest of my life. I shuffled along gripping the I.V. pole in one hand and my giant gown in the other, manuvering around my catheter and I.V. tubing. I made it once around and was led back to my room and into bed.

Chris told me to, "push the black button" if I was in pain. something about 8-10 minutes, morphine and self control. I was pushing that think like I was in a pac-man championsip. Not long after that  I was out. The thing about morphine is this; it works. Well. I would slip into these deeeep drug induced sleeps and then wake up certain that hours and hours had gone by when in fact 5 maybe 10 minutes have lapsed. This made for a loooong night. Another thing about morphine is the side effects. Opiates cause many to itch. Some more than others. I am one of the others. I was scratching so much that I actually dragged my dped up self across the room to the closet, searched through my purse, found my keys and removed my nail clipper from it. Around 3am I de-clawed myself and called to Chris for benadryl.

With opiates and antihistamines on board I made it through the night. The morning brought with joy and pain. Joy, my cathter removal and pain, my and pain,...Ice Chips. Now in the past, ice was my friend. A dear, dear friend. I, in fact, purchase 20 lb bags of ice from Sam's Club on a weekly basis.  I love ice. Ice chips, not so much. I had to eat and swallow 1 oz ice chips/hr for 3 hrs and then 3-4 oz ice chips every hour there after. I did it. Yes I did.

After the ice came the clear liquids. A giant food tray with 2 oz jello, 3 oz broth, 4 oz crystal light. No straw. I slowly worked through the liquids. My nurse said my output was good. Chris later said I was,"Peein' like a race horse" and my energy was up. I'd abandoned that confounded Morphine pump about 11pm the night before. I was now on liquid vicadin. It tasted vial, but it worked wonders on the pain.

Day two came soft solids.
