Time flies...
Dec 11, 2008
Well, as you can see I'm not a big one for "blogging"!! I planned to leave a post on my one year "surgiversary" but even that came and went without me updating things... It's hard to believe it's been a little over a year since my RNY surgery. I had my one year check-up with the surgeon's office yesterday and all is going great. I'm down a total of 107 pounds and have had absolutely no problems at all. I do find that now the hard work begins - I'm feeling hungrier these days and have found that I don't dump and can eat pretty much anything. Of course "can" and "should" are very different things and that's where the work comes in! I still need to make the right choices to keep this surgery a success. And I do want to keep the weight off so I have to make the right choices!
At this time I'm seriously considering going to Mexico for some plastic surgery. I'd like to have a lower body lift and a breast lift and augmentation. (Augmentation because there wouldn't be much breast tissue left once the lift is done and I at least want there to be something to "the girls"!!) I'm working with Cosmed Clinic (Dr. Alejandro Quiroz) and just need to make the final decision to do it. My husband is very supportive with whatever I decide. I know my loose skin isn't near as much of a problem as some people have and so I struggle with whether I should do it or not. I know I'd feel much better about myself if I get the surgeries done, but the expense is a big consideration... I hope to make some decisions in the next few days so if I do go ahead with it I can get the surgery scheduled for mid-March, 2009.
For anyone reading this, I just have to say that I'm very grateful that I was able to have WLS. It has definitely been one of the best things I've done for myself. It has all gone so easily for me and I would do it all again in a heartbeat!

Loving the weigh & measure days!!
Jun 06, 2008
Well, today was another "weigh & measure" day at Curves - as well as being my 6 month "surgiversary"!! It's amazing to me that I actually look forward to the day that I get my measurements done now - rather than avoiding it.
I'm six months post-op and as of today have lost 97 pounds and a total of 85.5 inches. I just couldn't be more pleased with the results and how things have progressed since my surgery. The only issues I've had is the hair loss and constipation. The hair loss seems to have lessened considerably in the last few days and I am seeing some new growth. So there is light at the end of that tunnel!! As for the constipation I've made a few changes - I started taking a stool softener, changed the type of iron I was taking and started drinking Crystal Light that has added fiber to it. That seems to have helped a bit. But I have to say, if those are the worst things I'll deal with, I'll take it!!! Losing the weight and inches has been worth it! I'm now wearing medium/small clothes and need to get some new dress slacks and jeans as the size 10s I'm wearing now are getting too big! I find that I don't need as much sleep as I used to and I have more energy. I'm keeping up on my exercising and following my surgeon's "plan" and I believe that is what has contributed to my success! If you look at my pictures and weight chart, just keep in mind that I'm short (4' 10") to keep things in perspective!
Well, enough of my rambling, random thoughts for now...

Time flies!
May 06, 2008
Gosh, I can't believe it's been 5 months since my surgery! I had my weigh and measure day at Curves today and decided it's past time to post another blog entry on my profile. I've tried to post one each month, but last month slipped by me and I didn't get one done... At my weigh in today I was happy to see I'd lost 8.5 pounds this month and 7.5 more inches. That's a total of 84.5 pounds and 65.5 inches since November!! I continue to feel great and have had no problems post-surgery. Well, I will admit the constipation and hair loss have hit me, but if those are the worst things that come of the surgery, I can deal with it! In the past month I have had significant hair loss, but I'm taking everyone's word for it that it is temporary. I'm working with my hairdresser because I usually get regular perms and colors so we're working out what is best for me for now. Unfortunately I had fine, thin hair prior to surgery so the hair loss is significant to me - although others have said they don't notice it... I have started adding some different things to my exercise - in addition to going to Curves, I've started water aerobics and am enjoying the variety. My appetite has picked up some and I find myself eating more some days than I probably should, but it's still going well. I do keep track of my food, etc., by posting on a couple different sites (fitday.com and my-calorie-count.com). I find it very helpful to me to journal my food intake and activities. On a personal level, life is good!! My family continues to be a great source of encouragement and support for me which is so important! The friendships and support I have found on OH has also been a real blessing to me... For me personally, support groups like OH and in-person groups are extremely important! I encourage everyone who is looking at WLS or going through it to be sure to hook up with supportive and encouraging people in your life!!
Halfway there!!

Today is my 3 month "surgiversary" and I am halfway to my goal weight! In a way it seems like it's been much more than 3 months since I had surgery - but not in a bad way. I'm still feeling great, eating pretty much whatever I want and losing weight!
I had my weight and measurements done at Curves today and was very pleasantly surprised. I lost 15 pounds and 10.5 inches this past month!!! That means I'm down 62 pounds overall (including some pre-op loss). I am definitely not obsessed with the scale and hadn't even been on one since I weighed at Curves last month. To be honest, the real reason I don't get on a scale is that I know I would be disappointed if it wasn't moving downward every time I got on it. I know that's not a realistic expectation so rather than set myself up for disappointment, I have chosen not to weigh myself unless it's my monthly Curves weigh in or a visit to the doctor's office. Some day I may change that, but for now it's working for me...
We've had some beautiful weather lately and I've really enjoyed getting outdoors to walk. I go to Curves 5-6 times a week and walk when I can, too. It's been so nice to walk along the waterfront or up at Greenlake and have the sun shining! It's still chilly out, but I warm up quickly on a brisk walk! I still use the treadmill a bit, but not too much right now.
I've had a few days where I'm much hungrier than other days. A day or two I've felt like I've eaten way too much, but then I figure it out and it's maybe 1000 calories for the day (that only happened once, really) and I remember how I could easily eat 1000 calories in one meal or snack before!!! But I am trying to keep the calories lower than that since I am still in the weight loss phase. So far, all is good!!

Two months now and all's well...

I don't seem to post here very much - I guess you can tell I'm not much of a "journal-er"!! But I know how important reading other people's blogs were to me when I was pre-op so I'm trying to put down my thoughts every so often. I had my 2 month post-op visit on 2/1 and then got my weight and measurements done at Curves on 2/8. Per the dr's scale, I lost 7 pounds the second month. Based on Curves, I lost 10 pounds last month; but most importantly, 9 more inches!! I have lost a total of 47 pounds and 37 inches!!! (This includes the pre-op loss.)
One thing I find amazing is that I still don't feel hungry a lot of the time. If I drink all the water I should and drink my protein shakes regularly - I really don't need food. But I do eat a little bit of food every day. I'm following my dr's program and am doing fine. I was discouraged at the slow weight loss, but he seemed to think it was OK. I do know that I am exercising almost every day (Curves and/or the treadmill) so hopefully I'm building lots of muscle and losing fat!! My clothes are getting very baggy - and they were very snug (or not fitting at all) before surgery. Fortunately, I have a closet full of clothes I can "shrink into"!!
At this point, I can eat pretty much whatever I want, but in small quantities. I haven't had any food that has made me sick, given me "dumping syndrome" or "foamies"... I eat about 2 ounces of food for a meal and have tried bread, pasta and other things that some people have trouble with. I've just started using fitday.com to track my food and exercise so it will be interesting to see how that works...
Well, that's about it for now. Life is going well and I'm happy with the results so far!

Pounds and inches...
Jan 07, 2008
Here I am barely over one month out from surgery. I was feeling a bit disappointed over the lack of pounds lost, but the dr. assures me I'm doing fine. I stopped off at Curves today to get weighed and measured and was very pleasantly surprised to see how many inches I've lost! Since 12/5/07, I am down 20 pounds and 16.5 inches!!!
Prior to that between 11/14/07 and 12/5/07 I had lost 13 pounds and 11 inches!! I know everyone measures differently and different areas, but I'm going by the Curves measurements. I am so thankful that my surgery and recovery have been so uneventful. I feel absolutely back to normal - except that I'm not hungry - that's definitely not "normal" for me!! I was released to start soft foods last Friday, but haven't been hungry enough to eat too much. I have tried cottage cheese and some soft cheese and that is going fine. I posted some one month pictures today and I don't see a lot of change in my body, but see more change in my face. Just for kicks, here are the measurement changes...
12/5/07 1/7/08 Inches lost
Bust 51.0 48.0 3.0
Waist 47.0 43.0 4.0
Abdomen 53.5 50.0 3.5
Hips 51.0 49.0 2.0
Thighs x2 57.0 55.0 2.0
Arms x2 32.0 30.0 2.0
Weight 223.0 203.0 20.0 pounds lost
My husband has sure noticed the changes and is so good to compliment me on the losses!! That sure makes me feel good. My family has been very supportive, too. I can climb a flight of stairs without having to catch my breath, my sleep is more restful and I don't wake up with a back-ache. I know that I just need to use this "tool" correctly and soon I will be at my goal and will be able to stay there!!!

One week and all is well....
Dec 14, 2007
I had my one week check up with Dr. Hirai (Dr. Oh's partner) today and all is well. I'm feeling better every day and am very happy with how things are going. After a rough day last weekend, it's just been better and better!! I haven't lost as much weight as some report, but I think I'm doing OK. I lost the 10 pounds gained at the hospital as well as 9 more in the last 8 days - so I really can't complain!! I'm not feeling hungry at all, but am getting in all the water I should. I'm to add protein drinks now, but now sure how I'll get all that down! Quite a difference from the way I'd eat in the past!!
My husband is so proud of me and has been such a rock through all of this. The support and friendships I've gained from the OH site and local support groups has been wonderful!!
I started driving yesterday and will go back to work on Monday... I can't really ask for anything more than that!!

Wow! I can hardly believe I'm here writing this from the recovery side of surgery! It was a bit of a journey to get to this point with insurance red tape and hoops, but I had my lap RNY surgery on Thursday, 12/6/07. All went very well and I was discharged at noon on Friday, 12/7. I was feeling great and thought I was on the downhill side of it - then the effects of all the meds from the hospital wore off and I realized I felt like crap! Nausea overwhelmed me and I had some dry heaves - very scary as I know we shouldn't do that! But I got the anti-nausea suppository in early this morning and have been on my pain meds better today and am feeling much better. Yesterday I was wondering what I'd done to myself, but today I'm much more hopeful!! My husband and family have been very supportive, which is great!! I had a fabulous Angel in Amber Sawyer - thanks so much, Amber!!! I have really appreciated all the friendships and support that I have found here on the OH site and really look forward to continuing with it all! I haven't weighed myself at all since coming home - I was not at all prepared to gain 10 pounds from 5:30 a.m. the day of surgery to 11:00 p.m. that evening! So it kind of scared me off of the scale for a few days!! But I have learned that is normal with all the IVs given and just the trauma of surgery... Hopefully by my follow up appt with Dr. Oh this Friday I'll be rid of that 10 pounds plus a few more!!!
