Being home from Surgery

Jul 31, 2008

Surgery is over!  I returned home yesterday after spending an extra night in the hospital.  The surgery was not performed until 6:00PM on Monday.  I did not sleep well that first night.  They hooked up oxygen to my CPAP and I my breathing slowed.  I kept waking feeling like I stopped breathing.  When they took the oxygen away, my breathing went back to normal.

Keeping up with the drinking is tougher than it sounds, especially since I am still napping quite a bit.  My tastes did not change at all so the protein that I stocked up on will work well.

I recommend the walking every several hours, as early as you can.  It does wonders to get your insides working again.  Passing gas was a religious experience as it felt like a pressure valve had let loose.

Thanks again to everyone that left a note.  I appreciate your best wishes and advice.

Introduction Blog

Jul 26, 2008

This is my introduction.  I weigh 314 pounds and have a 46 BMI.  My Lap RNY is scheduled for Monday 7/28 and I think that I am ready.  I have read everything I can, and interloped on many of the message boards.

I do not fear the surgery.  I am in fairly good health and have confidence in the surgeon/support.  I am participation in the Duke WLS program, which may sound more impressive than it is.  I am a little concerned with the support portion of the program.  The psych and Nut part of the program feels like summer camp not a professional medical practice.  While I have not initiated any conversation with them, I have received no call from them.  Maybe the support starts after the surgery and not before.

My kitchen is stocked with several types of protein supplements, Cytosport, Isopure, Nectar, and Lean Body, and I have plenty of filtered water.  I also have several of the protein bullets but do not know how to use them, straight-up or mixed with the water.  I have figured out that I am going to save a boatload of bucks on food over the next three weeks, at least.

That is about it until after the surgery.
