April 7th...

Apr 21, 2008

Well, I finally did it!!!!  I survived my surgery!

I arrived at the hospital at 830am-ish on Monday, April 7th without a reservation in my mind!  I got all dressed up in my gown and easter bonnet and they wheeled me into surgery.  I woke up from anesthesia and began to cry...!  The nurses said, Crystal, we know you are in pain, the pain medicine is on its way.  I didnt dare tell them that I wasn't crying from the pain, but the thought that I'VE MADE A MISTAKE, FIX ME BAAAAAACK!!!

Any of ya out there had THAT thought go thru your mind?  I gained my composure (the pain meds helped lull me into a nice calm state!), and they wheeled me to my room, where I had several family members and friends waiting anxiously to see me post-op.

Everything I had read and everything I had been told before my surgery said that it would last about an hour.  I was on the operating table somewhere in the area of 3 hours!  My husband said he really began to worry at the 2 hour mark, but was reassured by nurses that an hour was only an average and I could actually be in there up to 4 hours and all was fine!  Now, why didnt they just tell ya that from the get go??

As I was being wheeled thru Women & Childrens 4th floor bariatric floor to my room, my best friend, Laurabeth asked me how I felt.  I remember telling her that I felt like the doctor had kicked me in the stomach!!!  Laurabeth, by the way, decided it would be a neat thing to have a photo record of my entire experience.  So, we started out the night before with her taking some "before" pics.  She continued snapping pics while I was in the hospital. ...

Laurabeth is a truely awesome best friend.  My husband stayed for a few hours after my surgery, but then had to get home and care for our 3 year old daughter.  Laurabeth volunteered to stay the night in my room to keep me company and help me anyway that she could.  I thought I was being  very selfish and childish accepting her offer.  I have spent nights in those awful chairs in hospital rooms....turn into a bed, MY A$$!  But, she had a laptop to occupy her while I was in a medicated stupor, and at the worst of it, she was snapping pics!!!  I cant tell  ya how many pics I have of myself looking VERY stoned!  I never needed or wanted for anything while my friend was there.  She refilled my ice water and ice bags before I even thought about needing it done.  When it came time for those horrible walks, she was behind my back helping me to lean forward and get out of bed and by my side every step down those hallways...When I think about it, I almost cry to realize what a good friend she really is to me...

I am 2 weeks out from surgery today and am still very much recovering...so, it's late and i'm beat, I will add more to this blog about my experience soon!  Keep reading!

Well, the good part is coming...

My surgeon, psychologist, PCP, and nutricianist have all gave me the clearance for surgery...

I am waiting for insurance approval right now...My surgeon, Dr Shin, is pretty confident that I will get approval during the month of October!

Everyone was wonderful at Dr Shins office when I was there for my consult on September 25th!  The other patients and their families were all so eager to share their experiences and the staff was very nice and helpful.

I dont have a surgery date yet, but Dr Shin said it looked very good for me to get into surgery by the end of October or beginning of November!  Such GOOD NEWS!

I am attending a surgical support group meeting next week in Charleston at Womens and Childrens Hospital which is required before surgery.  I hope everyone is as nice there as those at the office!   I love to hear all about others' experience with this surgery!

WISH ME LUCK!

THE END OF MY JOURNEY TO SURGERY SEEMS TO BE APPROACHING!

Frustrations! Good things come to those who wait...?

Aug 14, 2007

Through diet and exercise I have lost 41#s since beginning my doctor supervised diet in Jan 07.  However, I have yet to even have a surgery consult with my chosen surgeon (Dr Robert Shin) due to complications of paperwork and it would seem understaffing at Dr Shin's office! A week ago, I finally got a consult date of Sept 25th after seeking an appointment for the last 2 months!!!  I have a little more than 5 weeks to wait until the appointment, and my dieting and weightloss has reached a plateau.  I'd hoped to get down to 350# before surgery, so that my surgery and total weight loss post surgery would be better...As slow as I'm progressing towards a consult date, I very well may be at my goal weight (<200#) all on my very own!!!  That would be great..but I dont see it happening.  I'm very pleased with myself for the 41# weight loss to date, but am getting discouraged with the progress towards surgery!  I had checked out Curves recently in Ohio and had planned on joining my local Curves, and got home to discover:  they went out of business in Summersville!  Now the nearest location is waaaaay to far to drive to regularly.  I may have to break down and join a regular local gym...I'm not looking forward to that, but need more exercise to help get in a little better shape before surgery.  I'm having trouble getting in for my phsych eval too because everytime they run my insurance, it comes back the my coverage is not in effect.  I've contacted the insurance and they assure me that I indeed have full coverage and there should be no problems using medfax and getting me a preapproval for the evaluation...Its been 3 weeks just trying to get an appointment.

My new mantra is: GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT...
Well, I'm definetly waiting, so I hope its really good when it gets here!!!
